Unpaid Volunteer Position

Position Overview

The Whitby Housing Action Committee (WHAC) is a volunteer-led committee dedicated to supporting Habitat for Humanity GTA's mission of building affordable homeownership opportunities for local families. Through fundraising, advocacy, partnerships, and community engagement, our committee is working to help bring Habitat's Whitby Build to life.

We are seeking enthusiastic, well-connected, and community-minded Events Committee Members to help plan, organize, and execute fundraising and community engagement events that inspire participation, build awareness, and generate meaningful support.

Whether you have experience leading large-scale fundraising galas, coordinating community festivals, securing sponsorships, organizing silent auctions, or simply enjoy bringing people together for a great cause, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Events Committee

Our Events Committee is made up of volunteers with diverse skills and experience who work together to create successful fundraising and community events.

Committee members may contribute in a variety of ways depending on their interests, experience, availability, and professional networks. There are opportunities to lead major initiatives or support specific aspects of event planning and execution.

Key Responsibilities

Committee members may assist or lead one or more of the following:

Event Planning & Execution

  • Participate in the planning, coordination, and delivery of fundraising and community events.
  • Help develop creative event concepts that engage the community and generate revenue.
  • Assist with event logistics, timelines, budgets, and volunteer coordination.
  • Support day-of-event operations to ensure a positive participant experience.

Fundraising & Revenue Generation

  • Identify opportunities to maximize fundraising through events.
  • Help develop sponsorship opportunities and fundraising strategies.
  • Secure raffle prizes, silent auction items, experiences, and in-kind donations.
  • Assist with ticket sales, donation campaigns, raffles, auctions, and fundraising activities.

Community & Corporate Engagement

  • Build relationships with local businesses, community organizations, service clubs, and potential sponsors.
  • Leverage personal and professional networks to introduce new supporters and partners.
  • Identify opportunities for collaborative events and community partnerships.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Habitat for Humanity GTA within the Whitby community.

Sponsorship & Resource Development

  • Help secure:
    • Event venues
    • Food and beverage partners
    • Entertainment
    • Event suppliers
    • Corporate sponsorships
    • Promotional partners
    • Volunteers and community supporters
    • Media and marketing opportunities

Leadership Opportunities

Volunteers with significant event planning or fundraising experience may choose to:

  • Lead the planning and execution of major fundraising events.
  • Chair or co-chair individual events or campaigns.
  • Mentor newer committee members and event volunteers.
  • Develop innovative fundraising concepts with strong revenue potential.
  • Build strategic partnerships that expand Habitat's reach and community impact.

Ideal Experience

We welcome volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds, particularly those with experience in:

  • Event planning and event management
  • Fundraising events and donor engagement

  • Business development and sales

  • Hospitality or tourism

Experience organizing events of any size—from local community gatherings to corporate functions, golf tournaments, galas, festivals, charity events, networking receptions, or fundraising campaigns—is highly valued.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 3–8 hours per month, with increased involvement leading up to events.
  • Attendance at monthly committee meetings (virtual or in person) when possible.
  • Participation in committee-led events throughout the year.
  • A minimum one-year commitment is requested to help ensure continuity and long-term success.
