Internet for Humanity (I4H) is a Canadian registered charity with a global mandate to advance digital equity and ICT-enabled human development. I4H’s current active country program is in Uganda, where it works with secondary/high schools, farmer cooperatives and health centres to deliver digital skills training, entrepreneurship programming, and creative economy initiatives for underserved youth and communities. I4H foresees near-term expansion in surrounding sub-Saharan countries, especially Congo DR, and Kenya.

Christ’s Hands Centre (CHC) is a Canadian registered charity with a current mandate focused on vocational skills development and child welfare in Kasangati, Uganda, where it delivers hands-on vocational training and child development programming to desperately impoverished single-mothers, youth and families who lack access to any other educational pathways.

While I4H and CHC are independent organisations, they share a common Canadian administrative team, a common Ugandan implementation team, and a common commitment to community-led development.

I4H and CHC are jointly seeking an independent fund development specialist to lead resource mobilisation across both mandates.

Role Description

This is a full-time, 100% remote independent contractor role for a Fund Development Specialist based in Toronto, Ontario. The specialist will lead all fundraising and development activities across both I4H and CHC, dedicating approximately equal time and effort to each organisation.

Responsibilities span grant research, writing, and compliance; individual and major donor cultivation and stewardship; monthly, annual and digital fundraising campaigns; and stakeholder engagement within Toronto’s philanthropic, diaspora, and international development communities. The specialist will report directly to the President of I4H/CHC, and work in close coordination with program leadership in Uganda.

The role is structured as an independent contractor engagement. The fund development specialist will enter into separate services agreements with I4H and CHS. The expectation is that monthly invoicing will average approximately 50% of the agreed total monthly retainer to each organisation. Actual billing will depend upon how much time is spent on each of the organisations each month.

Duties & Responsibilities

Grant Development & Donor Relations

• Responsible for managing and executing the grant development strategy for both I4H and CHC, including prospect research, relationship development, proposal creation, and all reporting requirements.
• Submit a minimum of 10 grant applications per organisation per year, targeting aggregate grant income of at least CA$100,000 per organisation annually.
• Develop and maintain a grants calendar for each organisation to manage application timelines, reporting deadlines, and renewal cycles.
• Work effectively with program leadership in Uganda to gather relevant program data, evidence of outcomes, and narrative content required for proposals and funder reports.
• Oversee all stewardship activities related to foundation and institutional funders, and execute renewal strategies for both organisations.

Individual & Major Donor Giving

• Independently manage the individual giving portfolio for both I4H and CHC, including monthly giving programs.
• Undertake all activities along the fundraising cycle - identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship - for each organisation’s donor base.
• Develop and execute a major gifts strategy for each organisation, with particular focus on Toronto’s East African diaspora community, high-net-worth individuals, and Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) holders.
• Manage donor acknowledgement, tax receipting coordination, and database integrity for both organisations.
• Responsible for the strategy and execution of legacy and planned giving initiatives as applicable.

Campaigns & Digital Fundraising

• Plan and execute monthly/annual giving fundraising campaigns - including end-of-year appeals, Giving Tuesday, and matched-gift campaigns - tailored to each organisation’s audience and brand.
• Oversee digital fundraising content and email appeals in coordination with program staff and communications leads.
• Coordinate peer-to-peer, community, and diaspora-network giving campaigns for both I4H and CHC.

Stakeholder Engagement & Visibility

• Represent both I4H and CHC at Toronto-based philanthropic events, diaspora convenings, funder briefings, and international development sector gatherings.
• Coordinate with Victoria-based President to represent both I4H and CHC at Vancouver-based events, diaspora convenings, etc.
• Build and manage relationships with Canadian intermediary organisations, community foundations, affinity groups, and diaspora giving networks relevant to each organisation’s mandate.
• Support the development of funder-facing collateral, impact reports, and cases for support as required.

Coordination & Reporting

• Provide monthly progress reports covering pipeline status, applications submitted, funds raised, and upcoming deadlines across both organisations
• Liaise with I4H and CHC program directors in Uganda - to ensure program intelligence is current and available for fundraising purposes
• Maintain organised, accessible, and up-to-date records of all fundraising activities for each organisation.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• University degree or equivalent professional experience in fundraising, international development, nonprofit management, communications, or a related field.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in fundraising or resource mobilisation within the nonprofit or international NGO sector.
• Demonstrated experience raising funds for Africa-based programming, including both in-country resource mobilisation and engagement with Canadian or international donor audiences.
• Proven track record in grant writing, with successful applications to Canadian foundations, government funders and/or international grant-making bodies.
• Experience managing individual giving portfolios including donor cultivation, stewardship, appeals, and campaigns.
• Strong prospect research skills and familiarity with Canadian and international funding landscapes relevant to international development.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including proposal writing, donor correspondence, and impact reporting.
• Demonstrated ability to build long-term relationships with a wide range of donors, funders, and community stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently, set priorities, manage competing deadlines, and deliver results with minimal administrative support.
• Based in Toronto, Ontario, with established networks in the local philanthropic, diaspora, and international development communities.

Assets

• Familiarity with Uganda or East African development contexts, particularly ICT-for-development, digital skills, and vocational training programming.
• Experience with Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), community foundations, and faith-based giving networks in Canada.
• Existing relationships with Canadian funders active in East Africa or Sub-Saharan Africa
• Experience managing fundraising across multiple organisations or programme portfolios simultaneously.
• Proficiency with donor management systems (e.g Raiser’s Edge, Keela, Donor Perfect, or equivalent CRM platforms).
• Comfort operating as a sole Canadian-based professional within a lean, internationally dispersed organisation, with direction provided by the President and program support drawn from teams in Uganda.
• Proficiency in French is not required but would be considered an asset, particularly for engagement with francophone funders and communities.

Contractor Terms

Engagement Type: Independent Contractor (Services Agreement)

Reporting To: President, Internet for Humanity Society & Christ’s Hands Centre Society

Contract Duration:12 months, (renewable)

Retainer: CAD $65,000 - $75,000 per annum, depending on experience

Invoicing: Actual %’s of time expended on I4H & CHS respectively, on a monthly basis

Working Conditions

This is a fully remote role. The Fund Development Specialist is expected to maintain a professional home-based or independent workspace and provide their own equipment. Active participation in Toronto’s philanthropic and diaspora community - including attendance at events, funder convenings, and stakeholder meetings - is a core part of the role and will require periodic local travel within the city. Occasional travel outside Toronto may be required for partner meetings or sector conferences. The specialist will work across time zones, collaborating regularly with leadership in British Columbia and program teams in Uganda.
