CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Sooke Transition House Society Board of Directors

Our Opportunity

We have open opportunities for new Board Directors to start in October 2026.

Each Board Director serves a two-year term and is eligible for re-election at the Annual General Meeting.

Organizational membership in good standing with Sooke Transition House Society (STHS) is a requirement of Director eligibility per our current bylaws.

All volunteers within the Society require a successful criminal record check clearance through the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General before starting.

Organizational Overview

The Sooke Transition House Society has been providing programs and services to women and children throughout the Sooke area since 1994.

The STHS is experiencing a significant increase in the need for our services with recent population growth as well as increasing statistics of gender-based violence and abuse.

The STHS provides emergency programs and services to women and their children who are in crisis resulting from gender-based violence. The staff and Board of the STHS are a group of compassionate professionals who are dedicated to providing support to women and children who experience, or bear witness to, abuse, are at risk of abuse, threats, and/or violence.

Our programs and services include:

  • 24 hour Crisis Line
  • Short-term Safe Housing
  • Victim Services
  • Community Outreach Services
  • Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling, & Empowerment (PEACE) Counselling
  • Stopping the Violence (STV) Counselling

Position Description:

We are looking for individuals that will bring their passion, ideas, dedication and skills to help propel the Society to broader impact and effectiveness. The Board of Directors’ role with the STHS is one of governance and oversight. As a Board Director, you will be part of the team of individuals guiding the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the STHS.

Skills and Experience

We are seeking Board Directors who care about strengthening our community.

Skills in areas like law or governance are welcome but not required. What matters most is your interest in our mission, your alignment with our values, and your commitment to learning and contributing. If you want to support our organization, we encourage you to apply - even if you don’t meet every skill listed.

Specific Skills: We welcome a diversity of skills on our Board. Currently, we are seeking new Board Directors with any of these proven skills and experiences:

  • Fundraising and Development
  • Accounting and Finance
  • Business and Community Leadership
  • Marketing and Communications
  • Non-profit and Voluntary Sector

General Competencies: Ability to work as part of a team; visionary; planning ability; good communicator; knowledge of the STHS; connected in the community; ability to review and understand financial information; office-level computer literacy (email/internet/Microsoft Office Suite)

Responsibilities:

  • Commit to the vision and purpose of the Sooke Transition House Society
  • Perform board governance and oversight, including setting vision, mission and strategy for STHS; approve budget; provide fiduciary oversight; oversee the employment of the Executive Director; ensure compliance with policies and procedures, as well as the STHS Constitution and Bylaws
  • Attend monthly board meetings and Annual General Meeting
  • Attend other meetings as needed
  • Champion and promote STHS at special events and in the community
  • Provide oversight, foresight, and insight to the Executive Director
  • Serve on at least one board committee as required

Time Commitment:

The Board Director role is a volunteer position, which requires a minimum of 5-6 hours per month to prepare for and attend Board and committee meetings, as well as participate in organizational events.

Currently, Board and committee meetings are held in-person in Sooke (virtual is an option if required). Board Directors may live anywhere in Greater Victoria, but preference will be given to individuals living and/or working in the Sooke region.

Benefits & Recognition:

  • Know that you are putting your best efforts toward supporting some of those most in need within the Sooke area
  • Contribute your knowledge and leadership expertise to further our mission and strategic goals
  • Connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate believers in our vision of a community in which personal quality of life and independence are improved
  • Develop board governance and leadership skills

How to Apply:

Please apply for a Board Director position by completing our Board of Directors Application form and providing an accompanying resume (if applicable) with the subject line “STHS Board Director Application” to board@sthsociety.ca.
