Sloane’s House is where families of children, aged up to twenty one (21) years, with complex 
health needs will come to join our family of caring professionals; a supportive community of 
parents and caregivers. Located in Whitby, it will be available for those living across Durham 
Region and in the surrounding underserved communities. A rejuvenating place for respite stays 
offering engaging programing for the child or young person, while parents and other caregivers 
take a much-needed break. And for those children and youth who are on their end-of-life 
journey, a place where specialized care will be provided in an environment where quality of life 
will be the focus for however many days remain. 
 
With an estimated 1,900 children with medically complex needs in Durham Region and 
surrounding communities, 800 in Durham alone, requiring paediatric medical respite and 
hospice care, the need for this Children's Hospice Is clear.

Interested in getting involved? 
Come join a Board dedicated to realizing the vision of a Children's Hospice in Durham Region. 
Currently, we are looking to fill three board positions with individuals who have experience in 
the following areas: 
 

• Events &amp; Fundraising – Experience developing, planning &amp; executing community events, 
vendor sourcing and event budget management. Event management certificate an 
asset. 

• Finance &amp; Audit – A strong business acumen for budget creation, management and 
oversight, non-profit standards for tax and audit. 

• Health Care – A background in a relevant area of the health care sector, particularly with 
insight into policy and operations relevant to respite and/or hospice. 

 
Time Commitment: 

• The board meets as a whole 6-8 times per year (except during the summer). 

• Each director available to serve on at least one Board committee that meets monthly 
(except the summer), and should actively participate in annual fundraising and other 
special events. 

• Directors are expected to serve, at least, one 2-year term. They can be reappointed for 
up to two more terms.

After gaining additional governance experience, Community Members often move on to become elected Board Directors.&nbsp;Preference is for residents or those who work within Oak Valley Health’s catchment area. The organization would also like to attract board members who possess senior leadership and business experience and bring a wealth of governance experience working with complex organizations going through transformation/change (either non-profit or for-profit). For next Board year we are also hoping to recruit candidates who have professional experience in research and academics, technology and digital transformation, or capital planning and redevelopment.
