The Thunderbird Neighbourhood Association is a non-profit organization that is made up of volunteer board members to assist with the governance of its board policies and procedures when it comes to offering recreation programs at Thunderbird Community Centre, 2311 Cassiar Street, in East Vancouver.&nbsp;Thunderbird Community Centre is jointly operated by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Thunderbird Neighbourhood Association.&nbsp;In the past, the Association has been instrumental in fundraising to expand the building to include a second floor in the 90s. Today, the Association works with the Park Board staff to provide recreational, educational, cultural and social programming to those that live in our community and beyond. With each passing decade, there are subtle changes that suggest gentrification is occurring and programming is shifting due to these demographics. MAKING AN IMPACT 
 
Reporting to the Vice President, Cancer Support, Programs and Services, the Sr. Manager, Child 
Youth and Family Program is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership on the 
development, implementation, evaluation and sustainment of children, families, youth, young 
adults programs across the country. This includes overseeing the Camp programs that runs in the 
Atlantic and BC that help create a safe and supportive environment for children and youth living 
with and beyond cancer and their families at summer camp and during year-round programming, 
and activities to support and prioritize the lived experience of adolescent and young adult (AYA). 
 
This position involves frequent traveling. 


WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: 

1. Camps Strategic and Operational Plan 

 • Leads national camp programs planning for future program advancement. 
 • Provides operational direction in the development and implementation of all year-round 

and summer programming in consultation with the Manager, Camps and Atlantic 
Coordinator, Camps.

 • Manages the implementation of program evaluations and integrates results of evaluations into 
future program planning. 

 • In collaboration with Assistant, ensure efficiency and oversight of processes, registration 
system, system reporting, and website. 

 • Provides oversight on promotional and communication plan. 
 • Manages the Camp Policies nationally. 
 • Manages national procurement of camp specific marketing assets and materials. 
 • Ensures that the Camps team are adapting and implementing national risk management 

measures and health and safety standards in the delivery of camps programs. 
 • Monitors program reporting and ensures that results are integrated into annual budget and 

other reports. 
 
2. Oversees Adolescent and Young Adult [AYA] 
 
 • Oversee the adolescent and young adult portfolio including supervision of camps. 
 • Identify, mitigate, and manage ongoing risks. 
 • Works with the Cancer Support leadership team to identify opportunities for camp 

development or other AYA initiatives in provinces. 
 
3. People Development 
 
 • Provide coaching, oversight and support to direct reports 

 • Provide support and direction to Manager, Camps in the development, alignment and 

accomplishment of objectives through training, quality and development opportunities for 

staff within the portfolio. 

 • Provide support and direction to Manager, Camps in recruitment, training, and recognition of 

volunteer workforce. 

 • Work with Team People to ensure efficient processes for annual seasonal and medical team 

hiring. 

 • Creates a culture of professional accountability. 

 • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health &amp; Safety Act and its 

regulations and complies with the Society’s Health &amp; Safety Policy. 


4. Financial and Stakeholder Management 

 • Works with the Revenue Development team to support and pursue funding by meeting with 
donors, providing insight on program needs and collaborating on donor recognition. 

 • Liaises with Revenue Development and Communications team to connect appropriate 
families, participants and volunteers to speaking engagements or revenue development 
opportunities. 

 • Attends events as needed to support fundraising efforts. 
 • In collaboration with the VP, Cancer Support, Programs and Services, negotiates contracts and 

legal requirements to ensure successful delivery of programs. 
In collaboration with the VP, Cancer Support, Programs and Service, maintain and

continuously expand relationships with hospitals, UBC, Atlantic Camp facilities, camping 
associations locally and nationally, camping programs and organizations that run health 
related camps 

 • Responsible to provide strategic support to CCS camps and child and youth programs across 
Canada. This includes leveraging Camp Goodtimes - BC infrastructure [e.g. booking systems, 
relationship with camping bodies, marketing and digital assets, policies and processes etc.] to 
help support other similar CCS programs across the country. 

 
 
5. Other Duties 
 
 • Foster a high-performance culture that leverages the unique talents and strengths of each 

member while encouraging their growth and development. 
 • Champion CCS as a hero in the face of cancer. 
 • Contribute to our culture of diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity (DIBE) by ensuring that 

all staff feel represented, valued, and heard across all aspects of their identity, including 
gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, and sexuality.

QUALIFICATIONS: 


 • Bachelor's degree in child development, Recreation or related field. Graduate degree an 
asset. 

 • 5-10 years management experience including child and youth programming. 
 • Experience leading a workforce 
 • Experience working with volunteers 
 • Experience working with youth and families with exceptional medical and psychosocial 

needs including but not limited to those with physical disabilities, mental health issues, and 
of diverse cultures and ages. 

 • Experienced in initiating, maintaining and expanding working relationships with multiple 
stakeholders both internal and external, often with competing priorities and differing 
perspectives. 

 • Understanding continuous quality improvement principles. 
 • Experience in managing multiple program budgets. 
 • Strong people manager that can provide leadership, support and coaching as required. 
 • Knowledge of the cancer system is considered an asset 
 • Experience managing cancer support programs and services is considered an asset 
 • Change management and or process improvement experience. 
 • Leadership experience in emergency situations. 
 • Must have obtained a valid BC Driver’s license 
 • Access to transportation to and from camp site (as needed only) 
 • Experience in a senior management position in an overnight summer camp setting is an 

asset.

 • Ability to exercise initiative, to be resourceful, work independently and collaboratively, 
adapt easily to changes in direction, priorities and handles uncertainty in a constructive 
manner. 

 • Articulate and authentic communicator with strong writing and presentation skills, 
communicates in a persuasive and compelling manner to a variety of audiences and for 
different purposes. 

 • Ability to balance competing priorities while moving long term initiatives forward. 
 • English is required, French/Bilingualism (French /English) is an asset due to the 

organization’s nationwide operations.

ABOUT CAMP POTLATCHCamp Potlatch, a wilderness Summer Camp and Outdoor Centre located on 133 acres along the picturesque shores of Howe Sound, is operated by BGC South Coast BC, which provides a wide range of social development and recreational services to children, youth, and families in the Lower Mainland.Camp Potlatch is a rustic wilderness site that provides a natural gateway into the rugged landscape of British Columbia’s South Coast. Sandy beaches and unspoiled hiking territory create an idyllic environment to work, explore and play! Even though it is less than an hour from Vancouver, the camp is truly isolated in pristine wilderness and is only accessible by boat. Wildlife sightings include – but are not limited to – whales, seals, porpoises, bears, and bald eagles! Adventure starts here!SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITILIES&nbsp;Reporting to the Director of Camp and Facilities, the Camp Potlatch Coordinator will act as a key member of the leadership team at Camp and fulfill a wide range of duties relating to Camp programs, facilities, administration, marketing &amp; promotion, and human resources.&nbsp;The Coordinator position involves overseeing the day-to-day functioning of Camp Potlatch during the summer season and the Outdoor Centre programs during the spring and fall seasons. Camp Potlatch is a boat-access-only site and the Coordinator will be generally based at Camp from May to October while programs are being delivered.JOB DUTIESWorking closely with the Director of Camp and Facilities, the Coordinator:<ul><li>Oversees the day-to-day functioning of Summer Camp, including the supervision of approximately 50 staff and 135 campers on site during each session.</li><li>Participates in the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Outdoor Centre.</li><li>Ensures that Camp Potlatch operates with the highest degree of health and safety standards for camper care, program delivery, food services, facility maintenance, and health/medical services.</li><li>Ensures that BGC’s program standards, guidelines, and policies are followed, and that the programs align with BGC’s mission, vision, values, and strategic direction.&nbsp;</li><li>Ensures that all facilities, equipment, and programs are managed in accordance with BGC expectations, British Columbia Camping Association standards, and legislative requirements.</li><li>Oversees all aspects of Camp programs, including multi-day, land and water-based off-site out-trips and Outdoor Centre programs.</li><li>Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of staff and volunteers.</li><li>Participates in budget development and is responsible for financial monitoring and tracking.</li><li>Working closely with the Registrar’s Office and BGC’s Marketing &amp; Communications Coordinator, develops Camp marketing and promotion materials and strategy, including registration materials.</li><li>Oversees kitchen functions at Camp, including supervision of the Cook.</li><li>Manages all health-related concerns of campers and staff including supervision of the Camp Nurse.</li><li>Assists the Director with overall facility management, including supervision of the Camp Caretaker.</li><li>Assists in overall Camp and Outdoor Centre program development, planning and evaluation.</li></ul>REQUIREMENTS<ul><li>Clear Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).</li><li>An undergraduate degree in related field, with a minimum of two years experience working in a leadership role(s) at an accredited summer camp or other large child and youth-serving recreation sector program.</li><li>Industry-recognized certifications and/or equivalent experience in kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, and lifeguarding.&nbsp;</li><li>Experience supervising, training, and evaluating staff and volunteers.</li><li>Demonstrated teamwork, leadership, and supervisory skills with the ability to resolutions to issues/conflict.</li><li>Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.</li><li>Computer and data management experience, with working knowledge of MS Office and computerized registration systems.</li><li>Strong organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.</li><li>Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure and remain focused within a constantly changing work environment.</li><li>Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, as well as living on site for the duration of the Camp program (May – October).</li><li>Occupational First Aid Level III.
