What is a Manager of Philanthropy and Engagement? 

The Manager, Philanthropy and Engagement is a relationship-focused leader responsible 
for advancing Feed Nova Scotia’s mission through innovative fundraising and 
communications initiatives. This role oversees a dynamic team, ensuring the successful 
execution of individual giving programs, donor stewardship strategies, fundraising events, 
public relations, and external communications. With a strong understanding of the 
nonprofit landscape and donor engagement best practices, the Manager plays a vital 
leadership role, contributing to organizational planning and impact.

What does the Manager of Philanthropy and Engagement do? 

Key Responsibilities 

Philanthropy &amp; Fund Development 

 • Manage a portfolio of Major Donors and prospects, leveraging platforms like 
CanadaHelps.org to track and deepen engagement. 

 • Use data and analytics to inform strategy, evaluate donor retention, track ROI, and 
report on performance. 

 • Ensure compliance with CRA guidelines for charitable receipting and donor 
recognition. 


 • Attend and support the events staff where needed to ensure the planning and 
execution of complex community events and major corporate campaigns are 
running in good standing. 

 • Stay informed on fundraising trends and emerging best practices in the non-for-
profit sector. 

Major Donor Relationship Management 

 • Build, manage, and steward relationships with Major Donors through tours, 
presentations, events, and personalized communications. 

 • Coordinate Major Donor acknowledgments, stewardship plans, and impact 
reporting to strengthen engagement and recognition. 

 • Collaborate with administrative staff to resolve donor concerns and escalate issues 
where needed. 

Engagement &amp; Communications 

 • Manages message and story development, including videos (i.e. identifies first voice 
stories, schedules and conducts interviews, supports editing and production 
process) 

 • Develop the Annual Social Media Plan along with managing the day-to-day activity 
 • Ensures a consistent visual identity across the organization 
 • Manages communication projects, from concept to production 
 • Ensure strong alignment between fund development and communications 

strategies to maximize donor and public engagement. 

Leadership &amp; Supervision 

 • Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance management for the Philanthropy 
and Engagement team. 

 • Keep the Director of Philanthropy and Engagement informed of key opportunities, 
challenges, and risks requiring attention. 

 • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven culture that reflects Feed Nova 
Scotia’s values and priorities.

What are we looking for? 

Qualifications 

 • Post-secondary education in Fundraising, Communications, Public Relations, 
Nonprofit Management, or a related field considered an asset. 

 • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in fundraising and/or communications, 
with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role. 

 • Demonstrated experience in donor stewardship, campaign development, and 
revenue generation. 

 • Strong understanding of donor databases (e.g., Raiser’s Edge, DonorPerfect) and 
digital engagement tools (e.g., CanadaHelps.org, Benevity) is an asset. 

 • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and deliver measurable results. 
 • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proposal and impact 

report writing. 
 • Knowledge of CRA charitable giving regulations and donor recognition standards.

The IWK Foundation (IWKF) is seeking a Community Engagement and Marketing Coordinator to play a

Reporting to the Director, Brand and Editorial, this position serves as a key liaison between the 
Foundation and the broader community, including patients, families, volunteers, and partner

The Coordinator is responsible for identifying and participating in community events, recruiting 
patient ambassadors for marketing materials, and supporting Corporate and Community Giving (CCG) 
initiatives. 
 
The Coordinator manages advertising bookings, oversees print and production logistics, and supports 
the execution of the annual IWK Foundation Telethon for Children in collaboration with the Marketing 
and Community Specialist. 
 
As the Community Engagement and Marketing Coordinator, you will serve as the Brand team’s liaison 
between the organization and the community. You will work closely with internal teams, local 
organizations, volunteers, and the public to recruit patients for marketing materials, and participate in 
events and initiatives that foster community participation and support. This role is critical in 
increasing visibility of the IWK Foundation. 
 
The IWK Foundation has a Flexible Work Plan, embracing a hybrid model with the expectation of a 
minimum of 2 days in the office per week. 
 

 • Community Engagement: 
o Identify and represent the IWK Foundation at community events to increase brand 

visibility 
o Provide support for Corporate and Community Giving events/initiatives when required, 

and assist in developing mutually beneficial relationships with partners 
o Identify and recruit IWK Health patients, families and team members to profile in 

marketing materials and/or act as ambassadors at community/corporate events, and 
track participation 

 
 • Production and Administrative Support: 

o Execute booking of advertising for print, digital and broadcast for all campaigns. 
o Source, manage and negotiate all printing and production. Ensure exceptional work is 

delivered on time and on budget and in keeping with brand standards. 


o Review Brand Support Requests for required information and assign to the 
appropriate Brand team member for execution and accountability of support request.

 • Telethon Logistics Support: 

o Assist the Marketing and Community Specialist in the production of the annual IWK 
Foundation for Children on CTV by providing logistical support. Includes but is not 
limited to the set up of filming location; onsite communications; 
development/purchase/delivery of required materials; installation of promotional 
materials and wayfinding; and production crew hospitality

This position is part of a small development team which includes Coordinators of Donor Relations, Events, 
Database and a Senior Advisor of Legacy Creation. You will work closely with the Director of Philanthropy and 
the Executive Director to support leadership giving to achieve annual revenue goals. 
 
Key Responsibilities: 

 • Manage portfolio of approximately 200-250 donors and prospects at levels of $1000+ 

 • Work with the development team to support the donor journey from new and annual donations 
through to multi-year pledges and future commitments 

 • Lead major gift development for specific fundraising campaigns and initiatives by identifying prospects, 
arranging personal meetings and securing major gifts to support overall campaign goals 

 • Oversee effective donor stewardship activities for VIP group of major supporters with a focus on 
retention and growth 

 • Participate in strategic networking and outreach activities to identify new potential major gift 
supporters 

 • Write major funding proposals as needed 

 • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications team to inform creation of effective donor

Required Qualifications and Experience 

 • Post-secondary degree or equivalent in relevant field or a combination of post-secondary education 
with fundraising / sales experience 

 • At least 5 years of direct fundraising or sales experience with demonstrated success 

 • Experience with moves management practices and demonstrated understanding of the different stages 
and strategies of donor/client engagement 

 • Proven experience developing strong working relationships with senior leaders, partners and donors 

 • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written 

 • Proven personal time management skills, including the ability to establish plans, meet deadlines, track 
follow-ups and provide regular status reports

future. 
 
Responsibilities: 

 • Identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward donors of $1000+ / year 

 • Manage a portfolio of approximately 250 donors and prospects, working with the development team 
to support the donor journey from new and annual donations through to multi-year pledges and 
future commitments. 

 • Lead major gift development for specific fundraising campaigns and initiatives by identifying 
prospects, arranging personal meetings and securing major gifts to support overall campaign goals. 

 • Oversee effective donor stewardship activities (regular communication, in-person meetings, 
invitations to special activities) for major supporters of the Nature Trust with a focus on retention 
and growth. 

 • Develop superior knowledge of current internal conservation and land stewardship initiatives to 
share with donors 

 • Identify opportunities to advance existing Nature Trust supporters into major gift and legacy giving 
prospects 

 • Administer stock donation process with donors and professional service providers to ensure gifts are 
processed accurately and providing service excellence to donors. 

 • Utilize internal systems and processes for timely and accurate actions and records management in 
CRM 

 • Oversee recognition plans and processes for major donors 

 • Participate in strategic networking and outreach activities to identify new potential major gift 
supporters 

 • Write major funding proposals as needed 

 • Develop and implement annual plan for stewardship and cultivation activities for major donors 

 • Work closely with Senior Advisor, Legacy Creation to integrate Legacy Giving promotions with 
donors 

 • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to inform the creation of effective donor 
communications, outreach and engagement materials. 

 • Provide mentoring and support for other staff regarding relationship management and linking 
donors with other aspects of the Nature Trust’s work including volunteerism and conservation. 

 • Work with external organizations and professionals to develop specialized knowledge and skills 
important for Nature Trust fundraising efforts 

 • Assist with developing annual fundraising plans

Required Qualifications and Experience 

 • Post-secondary degree in relevant field or a combination of post-secondary education with 
fundraising / sales experience 

 • At least 5 years of direct fundraising or sales experience with demonstrated success 

 • Experience with moves management practices and demonstrated understanding of the different 
stages of donor/client engagement from one-time gifts to legacy giving 

 • Proven experience developing strong working relationships with senior leaders, partners and 
donors 

 • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. 

 • Proven personal management skills, including the ability to establish plans, meet deadlines, track 
follow-ups and provide regular status reports 

 • Recognized as a committed team player who recognizes the power of collaboration to generate 
success. 

 • Strong understanding of CRA rules and regulations as they pertain to fundraising 

 • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and CRM software such as Donor Perfect, Blackbaud NXT, Sales 
Force or similar 

 • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel periodically within Nova Scotia for personal donor visits 
and activities. 


Additional Skills and Knowledge Desired: 

 • Experience working in a complex multi-stakeholder environment 

 • Working knowledge of charitable giving options such as insurance gifts, stock transfers, tax law and 
legacy giving mechanisms 

 • CFRE designation or equivalent 

 • A deep personal interest in protecting nature and the environment. 

 • Solid knowledge of Nova Scotia’s unique areas, communities and geography

Working Conditions 

The Nature Trust team works in a hybrid office environment with the physical office located in downtown 
Dartmouth. Staff have the option to define their regular workplace as primarily office- or home-based. This 
position will be expected to attend periodic meetings in person at the office, to ensure regular interaction 
and communication with other staff members, and to regularly meet with donors and prospects in person, 
which entails travel throughout the province. Occasionally there will be required events and activities 
outside of regular working hours. 


Additional Notes: 

This position is part of a growing Philanthropy &amp; Engagement Team who are positioned to expand the 
organization’s base of major donor support for future sustainability. This position will work closely with 
the Senior Advisor, Legacy Creation to transition many existing donor relationships to the new position 
and will be a vital part of the team who will develop new major gift relationships in support of the latest 
strategic priorities.
