We are looking for a Communications Specialist to join our team at Make-A-Wish Canada. 
Reporting to the Sr Manager of Influence &amp; Engagement, in this role you will play a vital role in 
enhancing the organization’s visibility and engagement through strategic communication 
initiatives and media relations, with a focus on growing brand awareness in the Southern Alberta 
and Saskatchewan chapters. 
 


 
This position is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication plans, as 
well as managing media relations and content development strategies for various fundraising 
events and initiatives, ensuring consistency of message and brand and directly contributing to 
raising funds. 
 
This role is based out of Calgary and is a full-time, permanent, hybrid position. 

 
WHAT YOU WILL DO 
 
EVENT COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT: 

 • Develop and execute strategic communication plans, including key messaging, media 
outreach materials and social media calendars/metrics for national signature events and 
regional events, with support to select third-party fundraising initiatives. 

 • Review fundraising event materials for brand compliance. 
 • Prepare regional crisis communications and issues management plans where relevant and 

co-lead reactive media statements. 
 • Act as a media liaison at events and spokesperson where appropriate. 
 • Support event content creation and/or source, coordinate, and handle photographer and 

videographer vendors for regional events/wishes where appropriate. 
 • Liaise with and prepare wish families for event participation as required. 

 
MEDIA RELATIONS: 

 • Develop and manage relationships with media outlets, identify local editorial media 
opportunities, solicit paid, discounted or gratis awareness and fundraising advertising from 
media partners in the community, in conjunction with, and support of national media 
relations activities. 

 • Use Meltwater to create media lists, disseminate media releases, monitor and evaluate 
coverage, and prepare reports for internal distribution. 

 • Coordinate and prepare stakeholders for media interviews, prepare a briefing document 
with key messages. 

 
CONTENT DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT: 

 • Create and manage content for regional initiatives for all local channels. 
 • Participate in social media editorial meetings, providing social media metrics. 
 • Create engaging wish stories and oversee volunteer and freelance writers. 
 • Partner with select influencers and content creators to support local/regional initiatives in 

compliance with the national influencer strategy. 
 • Manage, organize, and maintain video, story and photo archive and other communications

WHAT YOU BRING 

 • Degree or diploma in communications, marketing, public relations, or an equivalent 
combination of education, training and experience. 

 • 3-5 years of work experience in communications or related roles. 
 • Proven ability to generate media coverage, and the ability to be persistent in approaching 

and communicating with the media and the public. 
 • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build solid relationships with journalists, 

internal stakeholders, external stakeholders, wish families, and more. 
 • Experience writing communications plans, strategies and tactics. 
 • Attention to detail and accuracy, including strong proofreading skills. 
 • Strategic thinker with strong organizational and project management skills, capable of 

working independently to deadlines. 
 • Proficiency in MS Office, social media content creation and community management.

In collaboration with other members of the Leadership Giving Team, this role supports the growth of the Prairies’ &nbsp;fundraising portfolio and the operational excellence of the major gift program, including personally managing&nbsp;a portfolio of prospects and donors&nbsp;and&nbsp;raising $1M-$2M annually, with a pipeline of $3M-$5M.WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>Manages a portfolio of major gifts prospects (individuals) and personally conducts cultivation visits, solicitation calls, and stewardship activities to meet revenue budgets.</li><li>Identify and cultivate new prospects in the Prairies community</li><li>Identify and recruit senior leadership volunteers</li><li>Works closely with members of the CCS ELT in securing and stewarding leadership gifts.</li><li>Works with major gift support roles including researchers and writers as required.</li><li>Develops and maintains a qualified top prospect list and facilitates the continued identification and assignment of individual giving prospects.</li><li>Helps build the Major Gifts program by implementing the processes, systems, tools and communications required to effectively identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors within the Prairies portfolio.</li><li>Provides mentorship and support to senior leadership volunteers supporting major gift program development. </li><li>Works closely with the Nationwide Leadership Giving team.</li><li>Regularly tracks and analyzes key activity metrics against benchmarks.</li><li>Collaborates with and supports senior level staff and volunteers with high level major gifts prospects.</li><li>Creates a collegial working environment with key internal departments: Donor Services, Information Systems Management, Supporter Engagement, Planned Giving, Marketing, Communications and Digital, Events and Finance. </li><li>Supports the development of the budget of the Major Gifts Department at the regional level and influences growth of the budgets at the community level.</li><li>Creates a positive work environment which attracts and retains high calibre talents.</li><li>Recruits and retains qualified staff to meet resourcing needs.</li><li>Supports the team in achieving their commitments and departmental objectives.</li><li>Identifies developmental needs and implements tactics to reduce the gaps identified.</li><li>Works in compliance with the provisions of Occupational Health &amp; Safety in AB and complies with the Society’s Health &amp; Safety Policy. &nbsp;</li><li>Foster a high-performance culture that leverages the unique talents and strengths of each member while encouraging their growth and development.</li><li>Champion CCS as a hero in the face of cancer. &nbsp;</li><li>Contribute to our culture of diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity (DIBE) by ensuring that all staff feel represented, valued, and heard across all aspects of their identity, including gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, and sexuality.</li><li>Other duties as assigned</li></ul>QUALIFICATIONS:<ul><li>Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of ten years of progressive major gift fundraising experience is preferred.</li><li>Proven track record of identifying, researching, cultivating, soliciting, securing and renewing large individual major gifts with senior level volunteers and staff.</li><li>Deeply connected in the Prairies philanthropic community</li><li>Successful experience in training and coaching staff in relationship fundraising.</li><li>Demonstrated relational and leadership skills necessary to engage internal stakeholders to help foster a culture of major gifts philanthropy.</li><li>Strong relationship&nbsp;management skills.
