
Women and War Program Coordinator
This Job is for a mid level position within SASC Ottawa; suitable for a two-year specific experience level with outreaching, providing frontline direct services, including advocacy and training within Immigrant, Refugee and Visible Minority communities or five years of comparable/relevant experience. Experience working with survivors of War is an asset.
The person in this position reports directly to the Executive Director.
Direct Services - They will:
- Provide education and maintain contacts with individuals and organizations with specialized information such as doctors, lawyers and other specialties. Ongoing availability to take on one legal and non-legal advocacy and accompaniment.
- Respond to Service Seeker calls and inquires
- Carry out individual/one-on-one sessions on an ongoing basis with Service Seekers
- Facilitate two groups in a fiscal year
Outreach and Public Education - They will:
- Provide outreach and public education around women’s rights and issues faced by survivors of war rape and torture
- Maintain awareness and sensitivity to the issues of immigrant and refugee women and their families
- Continue working on the Trusted Intermediary project and recruiting and managing advocates.
- Provide advocacy around women’s rights, gender-based violence and discrimination
- Seek out and promote educational activities in the area of immigration, immigrant and visible minority issues and effective advocacy.
- Build and maintain networks with diverse communities and diverse organizations.
- Maintain an active knowledge of and list of community providers, of available services for immigrants and refugees
- Participate in training sessions to introduce Women and War program
- Develop and deliver training programs and awareness campaigns related to legal topics, immigration and refugee issues, public awareness of multicultural issues, human rights and community development.
- Provide home visits with women who are isolated or cannot leave their homes because of fear, physical condition or child care issues
- Assist women with obtaining social services, affordable housing and other basic needs
- Provide information about language and one to one tutoring for women to assist them navigate the medical and legal and socio-cultural systems.
- Actively participate on behalf of the Employer in local and international initiatives related to women’s rights and justice.
- Provide services to the population with complex mental health issues using a holistic approach to minimizing conflict with law and health complications.
- Work with staff and web experts on maintaining and updating the Women and War component of the SASC website
- Work with Staff and web experts on maintaining and updating the Justice hub on the SASC website
- Build on and bring visibility to the SASC/Women and War Manual
General Responsibilities - They will:
- Attend all staff meetings
- Take on and complete agreed upon household chores
- Keep up to date on community resources and relevant issues.
- Complete quarterly Statistics and Staff Reports
- Prepare a final report at the end of the contract
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or a minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience.
- At least two (2) years of specific experience working with immigrant and refugee communities.
- Proficiency in at least one language in addition to English (required).
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of issues affecting survivors of sexual violence and gender-based violence.
- Strong understanding of feminist perspectives, violence against women, and trauma-informed practices.
- Demonstrated group facilitation skills and experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Demonstrated understanding of Anti-Oppression (Anti-O) and intersectionality frameworks, particularly as they impact immigrant and refugee women.
