Volunteer Treasurer

Role Overview:
The Volunteer Treasurer is a member of the Board of Directors and plays a key leadership role in ensuring the organization's financial integrity and long term sustainability. This position is ideal for someone with experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or nonprofit financial management who is passionate about supporting a growing medical organization.
The Treasurer works collaboratively with the Board and Executive team to oversee financial operations, ensure compliance with applicable Canadian laws and regulations, and provide strategic financial guidance. A comprehensive transition and onboarding process will be provided.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the financial health and stewardship of the organization.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure proper bookkeeping practices.
- Monitor organizational income, expenses, bank accounts, and financial transactions.
- Review and authorize payments and reimbursements. Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO/Director.
- Assist in preparing the annual operating budget and financial forecasts.
- Ensure compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) reporting requirements and all applicable federal and provincial legislation governing nonprofit organizations.
- Coordinate the preparation and filing of annual tax and information returns, working with external accountants or advisors as required.
- Support financial planning, internal controls, and risk management.
- Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation.
- Assist with grant reporting and financial documentation required by funding organizations when applicable.
- Serve as a signing officer for banking and financial transactions.
Support annual financial reviews or audits when required.
Qualifications:
- We welcome applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Accounting, bookkeeping, finance, banking, or financial management.
- Nonprofit financial governance. Preparation of financial statements and budgets.
- Canadian nonprofit taxation and Canada Revenue Agency compliance.
Financial reporting and internal controls.
The following are considered assets:
- CPA designation or accounting education.
- Experience serving on a nonprofit board.
- Experience with QuickBooks
- Online or similar accounting software.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
- Knowledge of Canadian nonprofit legislation and governance.
