Help put science back in the headlines. The Canadian Covid Society is looking for a volunteer Public Relations Specialist with professional PR experience (including press conference and media event planning) for a couple of hours a week.

About the Canadian Covid Society

We are a national non-profit founded by physicians, scientists, engineers, and advocates. Our mission is to inform the public about the health consequences of Covid infections, to advocate for science-based measures to reduce transmission, and to empower and support people with Long Covid. Our current campaigns include Clean Air in Schools, Safer Health Care, and Long Covid awareness and resources.

What you’ll do

Draft press releases, media advisories, key messages, and talking points for national campaigns

Plan press conferences and media events end to end: logistics, run-of-show, briefing materials

Prepare our physician and scientist spokespeople: spokesperson prep and media training support

Shape PR strategy with our Communications Strategy Committee

Provide calm, practical crisis communications counsel when a story breaks

What we’re looking for

Professional public relations experience: in-house, agency, government, or freelance

Strong press release and media advisory writing (CP or AP style)

Hands-on experience planning a press conference or media event

Sharp news judgment and message discipline

Nice to have: health or science communication, crisis communications, media training delivery, French.

We’re hoping to find someone who has done this professionally, in any setting, and would enjoy being the expert in the room: someone we can hand a launch to with full confidence.

Time commitment

About 2 hours a week, on your own schedule, asynchronous-first

One short planning meeting a month at most, approximately one hour, always remote

100% remote, anywhere in Canada

What you get

Real campaigns with real tools: professional project management software and shared workspaces

National media moments for your portfolio, alongside credible physician and scientist spokespeople

A seat at the strategy table of a national health non-profit

A reference that reflects professional work

A role designed to be flexible and accessible, including for people living with Long

Covid or who are medically vulnerable

How to apply

Apply by email to volunteer@covidsociety.ca with the role name in the subject line and a few lines about your experience. Together, we can fight this.
