Role Summary

The Volunteer Host welcomes neighbours to the drop-in program, helps create a warm and inclusive atmosphere, facilitates informal conversations, and supports light refreshments service. This role is focused on building connections among community members, ensuring participants feel comfortable, safe, and engaged during morning sessions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet participants warmly upon arrival
  • Create a welcoming environment by introducing neighbours to each other and encouraging conversation
  • Set up and tidy the refreshments: prepare coffee, tea, and light snacks
  • Serve refreshments and maintain cleanliness of serving area during and after the session.
  • Facilitate conversations and help mediate friendly interactions.
  • Provide basic information about the drop-in program, program schedules, and other community services; refer participants to staff for specialized supports.
  • Monitor the room for safety and comfort; notify staff immediately about any concerns, incidents, or persons requiring extra assistance.
  • Record attendance or brief notes about participant needs or recurring issues when requested by staff.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Friendly, patient, and approachable manner with good interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable facilitating casual conversations and welcoming diverse individuals of varied ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to prepare and serve beverages and light snacks safely and hygienically.
  • Reliable and punctual for morning shifts.
  • Basic English language proficiency; additional language skills are an asset.
  • Ability to stand for periods of time and perform light physical tasks (arranging chairs, carrying trays).
  • Previous experience in customer service, hospitality, community work, or volunteering is an asset but not required.

Training and Support

  • Orientation to the Carlington Community Centre and drop-in program policies.
  • Training on food handling and health & safety procedures.
  • On-site supervision by program staff and access to resources for conflict de-escalation and referral procedures.
  • Opportunities to join regular volunteer meetings and share feedback.

Time Commitment

Morning shifts are 9:30–11:30 a.m., Monday to Friday. Volunteers are asked to commit to a regular weekly shift where possible to help build rapport with participants. Occasional substitute shifts may be available.
