Overview
We are seeking friendly, compassionate, and reliable volunteers to join the SCHC Friendly Visiting Program. This program provides regular social connection and emotional support to isolated seniors through scheduled phone calls. Volunteers offer companionship, conversation, and a caring presence that helps reduce loneliness and promote emotional well-being.
This role is fully remote and well suited for individuals who enjoy building one-on-one connections and providing consistent, meaningful social support.

Responsibilities
Commitment & Availability
- Provide 1–2 hours of support per week through scheduled phone calls.
- Commit to connecting with assigned seniors on a consistent schedule.
- Be reliable, punctual, and respectful of agreed-upon call times.
- Attend mandatory training prior to being matched with a client.
- Participate in ongoing check-ins or debriefing as required.
- Communicate regularly with the program coordinator regarding availability or concerns.
One-on-One Client Support
- Provide friendly conversation and companionship to isolated seniors by phone.
- Offer active listening and emotional support while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Foster a warm, respectful, and supportive connection.
- Observe and report any concerns or changes in a client’s well-being to the coordinator.
- Recognize when additional supports or referrals may be needed.
Technical & Administrative Skills
- Comfortable using a phone and basic technology for communication.
- Use email and digital tools to communicate with the program coordinator as required.
- Complete basic documentation or call logs when requested.
Confidentiality & Ethical Standards
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information.
- Adhere to SCHC policies, values, and ethical guidelines.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse lived experiences.
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times.
Mandatory Training (Provided & Required Completion)
All volunteers will receive training to prepare them for their role. The following training is mandatory and provided by SCHC:
- SCHC Friendly Visiting Program Training (6 hours)
- Ongoing training is required.
Requirements
- Ability to volunteer remotely 1-2 hours each week.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to engage seniors in meaningful, respectful conversation.
- Reliable, patient, and empathetic approach to client support.
- Comfortable providing support independently in a remote setting.
- Commitment to maintaining consistency and professionalism in all interactions.
- Interest in supporting isolated seniors and reducing social isolation.
