About the Foundation

The Harvey Foundation for Justice & Opportunity is a federally incorporated Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to education and opportunity for individuals and families affected by crime and the criminal justice system.

Through educational scholarships, grants, institutional partnerships, and community-focused initiatives, the Foundation seeks to address systemic barriers that prevent individuals from pursuing meaningful educational opportunities.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking dedicated individuals to join our Finance & Audit Committee, which operates under the oversight of the Foundation's Treasurer and reports to the Board of Directors.

The Committee supports responsible financial stewardship, organizational accountability, transparency, and the development of sound financial governance practices.

We strongly encourage applications from college and university students who are studying, or interested in pursuing careers in, finance, accounting, auditing, business administration, economics, or nonprofit management.

Previous Board or committee experience is not required.

This is an opportunity to gain practical exposure to nonprofit financial governance while contributing to an organization focused on educational access and social impact.

Key Responsibilities

Committee members may contribute to:

  • Reviewing financial reports, budgets, and organizational expenditures.
  • Supporting the development of financial policies and internal controls.
  • Assisting with financial planning and budget recommendations.
  • Identifying potential financial risks and recommending mitigation strategies.
  • Supporting audit readiness and financial accountability processes.
  • Reviewing financial procedures related to donations, sponsorships, grants, and program funding.
  • Participating in committee meetings and contributing to recommendations presented to the Board of Directors.
  • Promoting transparency, ethical financial practices, and responsible stewardship of Foundation resources.

All activities are conducted under the guidance of the Treasurer and the authority of the Board of Directors.

Who We're Looking For

We welcome applicants with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds, including:

  • Current college and university students.
  • Recent graduates.
  • Individuals interested in finance, accounting, auditing, or business.
  • Finance and accounting professionals seeking meaningful volunteer opportunities.
  • Individuals interested in nonprofit governance, financial accountability, and community development.

You do not need to be a CPA, accountant, or experienced finance professional to apply.

Ideal applicants will demonstrate an interest in learning, strong attention to detail, professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to the Foundation's mission.

What You'll Gain

  • Practical exposure to nonprofit financial governance and oversight.
  • Experience reviewing budgets, financial reports, and financial policies.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with the Foundation's Treasurer and other committee members.
  • Insight into financial decision-making within a growing nonprofit organization.
  • Professional development and networking opportunities.
  • Meaningful volunteer experience that may support future careers in finance, accounting, law, public administration, or nonprofit leadership.

Committee Structure

The Finance & Audit Committee operates under the oversight of the Treasurer of The Harvey Foundation for Justice & Opportunity.

Committee members provide advice, analysis, and recommendations to support the Board's financial oversight responsibilities.

This is a volunteer committee position and does not constitute appointment to the Board of Directors or confer voting rights at Board meetings.
