Volunteer Board of Directors

Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community while sharing your professional skills, experience, and leadership?

The Learning Place (TLP) is currently seeking engaged, community-minded individuals to join our volunteer Board of Directors, including candidates interested in the following positions:

• Vice-Chair
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Directors

The Learning Place is a community-based charitable organization serving adults throughout the Region of Peel. We help adults strengthen the literacy, numeracy, digital, and essential skills they need to participate more fully at home, at work, and in their community.

Our Board plays an important role in providing governance, strategic direction, financial oversight, and leadership to help ensure TLP continues to meet the evolving needs of the community we serve.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for engaged, community-minded individuals who can bring their skills, experience, and perspective to our Board.

Experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

• Human Resources
• Finance and Accounting
• Legal and Governance
• Fundraising and Grant Writing
• Education and Adult Learning
• Sales and Business Development
• Marketing and Communications
• Strategic Planning
• Community Development
• Previous Board or Committee experience

Previous Board experience is an asset but not required. We welcome individuals who are looking to develop their governance experience while making a meaningful contribution to their community.

Board Member Responsibilities

All Board members are expected to:

• Support TLP's mission, programs, and strategic direction
• Attend and actively participate in Board meetings
• Review meeting materials and come prepared to contribute
• Participate in at least one Board committee or working group
• Contribute professional knowledge, experience, and ideas
• Maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest
• Provide appropriate financial, governance, and regulatory oversight
• Support TLP events and initiatives when possible

Current Executive Opportunities

Vice-Chair

The Vice-Chair supports the Chair in providing leadership to the Board and assumes the Chair's responsibilities when required.

• Support the Chair with Board leadership and governance
• Chair meetings when the Chair is unavailable
• Support Board committees and special initiatives
• Assist with Board succession and leadership continuity
• Serve as a signing officer when required

Secretary

The Secretary supports effective Board governance and record keeping.

• Record Board decisions, motions, votes, and meeting minutes
• Ensure minutes are prepared and distributed in a timely manner
• Maintain appropriate Board and governance records
• Support official Board correspondence when required
• Maintain familiarity with TLP's Articles, By-laws, and key governance documents

Treasurer > Urgently hiring!

• The Treasurer provides Board-level oversight of TLP's financial affairs.
• Review financial statements, budgets, and financial reports
• Report significant financial matters to the Board
• Support the development and review of the annual budget
• Support appropriate financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and TLP's financial professionals
• Support the annual audit process
• Serve as a signing officer when required

Directors

Directors contribute to the overall governance and strategic direction of The Learning Place.

• Participate actively in Board discussions and decision-making
• Bring professional expertise, experience, and community perspectives to the Board
• Participate in at least one committee or working group
• Support strategic planning, special projects, and community initiatives
• Consider future Board leadership opportunities as appropriate

Commitment

• Volunteer position — unpaid
• Approximately 2–4 hours per month
• Board members are elected for a 2-year term
• The Board meets at least 6 times per year
• Board members are expected to participate in at least one committee or working group
• Executive officers are elected from among members of the Board of Directors
• Hybrid involvement — most regular Board meetings are held virtually, with occasional in-person meetings, strategic planning sessions, Annual Meetings, and special events at our Brampton Head Office
