Volunteer Board Director
Volunteer Board Director — Eco-Programming Alliance (Canada)
Remote | Canada | Unpaid
Eco-Programming Alliance (Canada) is seeking a Canadian citizen residing in Canada to join its Board of Directors.
We are an early-stage nonprofit organization advancing eco-programming, digital stewardship, and the long-term sustainability of software. Our principal initiative is the Methodological Sustainability Index (MSI) — a developing framework for assessing whether software remains understandable, maintainable, adaptable, and under meaningful human control, including when AI is used to create or modify it.
We welcome an engaged professional who would like to help shape the organization’s governance and development.
The role
Working with a small international board, you will contribute to:
- Organizational strategy, governance, and oversight.
- Review of plans, budgets, and key decisions.
- Development of policies and organizational capacity.
- Partnerships, outreach, and sustainable growth.
This is a working board role in an organization at an early stage of development. Meetings will be held online, with the expected time commitment discussed before appointment.
Who we are looking for
We welcome candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Human resources, recruitment, leadership development, or organizational development.
- Nonprofit governance, finance, accounting, audit, or risk management.
- Fundraising, partnerships, communications, or community engagement.
- Technology, responsible AI, sustainability, or education.
Previous board experience is welcome but not essential. We are open to professionals seeking their first board appointment who are willing to learn and contribute actively.
Eligibility and language
- Canadian citizenship and residence in Canada are required for this vacancy.
- Ability to participate in board discussions and review documents in English.
What the opportunity offers
You will gain practical nonprofit governance experience, contribute your expertise to an emerging international initiative, and help address an increasingly important question: how can organizations retain lasting control over the software on which they depend?
To express interest
Please send a short introduction and your résumé or LinkedIn profile to valeri.rakitine@eco-programming.org, outlining your interest and relevant experience.
