About Us
Early Childhood Development Initiative (ECDI) is a Toronto-based non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing early learning outcomes for African children aged 0–12. Through culturally affirming, community-rooted programs, ECDI supports Black families and promotes educational equity.
Funded under the Ontario Government’s BYAP initiative, ECDI delivers innovative STEM programs to Black African children across Ontario. We're seeking a passionate STEM Program Lead Facilitator with strong leadership potential to design and deliver hands-on STEM experiences while mentoring youth volunteers and supporting community engagement.
The Opportunity
As a STEM Program Lead Facilitator, you will be involved in direct facilitation, lead program initiatives, mentor youth and volunteers, and represent ECDI in community partnerships. This role is ideal for someone who is eager to grow into a leadership position while making a direct impact on Black African children and families across the GTA.
The STEM Program Lead Facilitator will instruct the following four subprograms throughout the year:
Afterschool STEM Program – Tuesday to Friday (after school hours during the fall, winter and spring semesters)
Full-Day STEM Camps - several weeks throughout the summer & March Break
Camp shift hours
Family Math Workshops – One weekend (Saturday or Sunday) per month
Weekend Family Field Trips per quarter
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Delivery
Co-develop and lead Black culturally responsive STEM programming for children ages 6–12
Lead program planning and support execution of four core subprograms (i.e., Afterschool STEM Club, Day Camps, Family Math, Field Trips)
Oversee sourcing, organizing, and inventory of STEM materials and kits
Supervise, mentor, and schedule youth and student volunteers
Serve as a primary point of contact during camps and events
Maintain data collection (e.g., attendance, surveys) and analyze data for reporting
Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager
Community Engagement
Build relationships with families, schools, communities, and Black STEM professionals
Design and deliver outreach sessions to recruit participants
Represent ECDI at community events and contribute to social media/newsletters
Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager
Team & Admin Support
Lead volunteer onboarding and training
Maintain accurate records (e.g., attendance, evaluations, incident logs)
Support conflict resolution and ensure positive group dynamics
Collaborate with internal teams and contribute to program improvements
Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager
Minimum Qualifications
Lived experience as a person of African descent
Undergraduate degree in the Sciences
Minimum 3 years’ experience facilitating educational or community-based programs for children
Experience in informal STEM education (e.g., coding, robotics, maker learning, tutoring, camps, afterschool programs, etc.)
Strong computer literacy (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Zoom, project management software, etc)
Demonstrable organizational and planning skills, ability to prioritize to meet deadlines, strong capacity for self-direction and proactive approach to problem solving
Willingness to travel to various program sites (Toronto and nearby areas)
Demonstrated connection to African or Black communities in Canada
Valid CPR-C certification and current Vulnerable Sector Police Check
Assets:
Experience in team supervision or volunteer coordination
Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices
Passion for STEM education
Conversational French language
Master's degree
Job type: Full-time; 40hr/week; contract until March 31, 2026
Salary: $55,000-65,000 (per annum gross salary)
Schedule: 8 hr/day; Monday-Friday (including evenings and occasional Saturday/Sunday)
