About Smiles Foundation

Smiles Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to improving access to dental care, health education, and community support for underserved populations.

Our work includes community initiatives in Canada as well as programs and operations in the Dominican Republic, where we collaborate with clinics, professionals, volunteers, donors, partners, and local communities to help expand access to essential dental care and resources.

As our organization continues to grow, we are strengthening our digital presence and are looking for creative and reliable Social Media Content Creator Volunteers to support our Social Media & Digital Marketing team.

About the Role

The Social Media Content Creator Volunteer will help Smiles Foundation maintain a consistent and engaging social media presence by transforming approved organizational information, impact stories, program updates, announcements, volunteer activities, donor initiatives, and campaigns into engaging social media content.

The volunteer will create content based on Smiles Foundation’s approved social media calendar and organizational priorities, working closely with the Social Media Coordinator Volunteer and other members of the Communications and Digital Marketing teams.

This role is focused specifically on social media content creation rather than overall social media account management.

Content may include captions, posts, stories, reels, carousels, short-form copy, donor-recognition content, campaign materials, and other platform-appropriate social media content.

Key Responsibilities

Social Media Content Creation

  • Create social media content based on the approved social media calendar.
  • Develop engaging captions, post concepts, short-form copy, stories, reels, carousels, and other social media content.
  • Transform approved organizational information into clear, engaging, and audience-appropriate social media content.
  • Adapt approved impact stories, program updates, announcements, volunteer activities, donor initiatives, campaigns, and organizational news into social media formats.
  • Tailor content according to the requirements and audience of each social media platform.
  • Incorporate appropriate calls to action into content when required.
  • Ensure content follows Smiles Foundation’s approved brand voice, messaging, and visual standards.
  • Use only approved organizational information, photographs, videos, statistics, stories, and other assets when developing content.
  • Propose relevant content ideas that can help maintain a consistent and engaging content pipeline.

Donor Recognition Content

The Social Media Content Creator will also support Smiles Foundation’s donor-recognition efforts.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Prepare Donor Recognition Posts using information from Smiles Foundation’s finalized Annual Donor Recognition Database.
  • Transform approved donor information into appropriate social media recognition content.
  • Coordinate with the Social Media Coordinator and Graphic Designer/Canva Volunteer when visual assets are required.
  • Ensure donor-recognition content follows organizational branding and recognition guidelines.
  • Use only information that has been approved for public recognition.

The Social Media Content Creator is not responsible for contacting donors to obtain information. Donor information will be provided through the appropriate internal process.

Content Review & Revisions

  • Submit content with sufficient time for internal review before scheduled publication.
  • Incorporate revisions requested by the Social Media Coordinator.
  • Ensure captions, copy, visuals, calls to action, and supporting materials are publication-ready before final approval.
  • Complete requested revisions within agreed timelines.
  • Maintain consistency in tone, messaging, formatting, and quality across content.

Content Organization

  • Maintain organized drafts and final versions of social media content.
  • Follow the organization’s established file-management and content-approval processes.
  • Clearly distinguish between draft, revised, approved, and final content when applicable.
  • Ensure editable files and supporting materials are properly stored and accessible to the appropriate team members.

Privacy, Consent & Responsible Storytelling

Because Smiles Foundation works with communities, volunteers, donors, healthcare professionals, and beneficiaries, volunteers must follow organizational requirements related to:

  • Privacy
  • Consent
  • Safeguarding
  • Appropriate use of photographs and videos
  • Responsible representation of beneficiaries and communities
  • Approved organizational messaging
  • Media-use requirements

Content Creators must use only approved information and assets and should never publish or independently distribute organizational content without the appropriate approval.

Collaboration

The Social Media Content Creator will work primarily with the:

Social Media Coordinator Volunteer

The Social Media Coordinator will help establish priorities, campaigns, schedules, content requirements, review processes, and revisions.

The role may also collaborate with:

  • Graphic Designer / Canva Volunteer – for branded graphics and visual assets.
  • Photo & Video Support – for photographs, videos, and other multimedia materials.
  • Other relevant Smiles Foundation teams when content relates to specific programs, campaigns, events, fundraising initiatives, volunteers, or organizational activities.

Expected Deliverables

Social Media Content Creator Volunteers are generally expected to:

  • Produce approximately 2–3 social media content pieces per week.
  • Meet internal deadlines for content review and scheduling.
  • Provide publication-ready captions, copy, and supporting materials.
  • Adapt approved organizational content into appropriate social media formats.
  • Complete assigned donor-recognition posts when required.
  • Complete requested revisions within agreed timelines.
  • Use approved organizational information, visual assets, messaging, and calls to action.
  • Maintain organized drafts and final versions of content.
  • Propose relevant content ideas to help maintain a consistent social media content pipeline.

The complexity of individual content pieces may vary. For example, a reel or multi-slide carousel may require more time than a simple post.

Quality, consistency, reliability, and respect for deadlines are more important than producing a high volume of content.

Time Commitment

This is a remote volunteer position requiring approximately 2–4 hours per week.

We are looking for volunteers who can make a minimum commitment of 6 months.

Although the schedule is flexible, volunteers must be able to meet agreed content deadlines and allow sufficient time for review and revisions before scheduled publication.

Qualifications & Skills

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has an interest in social media, digital communications, content creation, marketing, storytelling, or nonprofit communications.
  • Has strong written communication skills and can create clear and engaging social media copy.
  • Understands how content should be adapted for different social media platforms and audiences.
  • Is creative and able to develop engaging content ideas from information provided by the organization.
  • Has strong attention to detail.
  • Can follow brand guidelines, messaging standards, and content instructions.
  • Is organized and able to manage drafts, revisions, deadlines, and final content.
  • Is comfortable receiving feedback and incorporating revisions.
  • Can work independently while collaborating effectively with a remote volunteer team.
  • Demonstrates reliability, professionalism, accountability, and respect for deadlines.
  • Is comfortable working with shared digital files and collaborative tools.
  • Is willing to learn about Smiles Foundation’s programs, activities, and mission in order to represent the organization accurately.

Assets

The following are considered assets:

  • Previous social media content creation experience.
  • Experience creating content for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or other social platforms.
  • Experience writing social media captions and short-form digital copy.
  • Experience developing reels, stories, or carousels.
  • Canva experience.
  • Basic graphic design or video-editing skills.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit, charity, community organization, school, business, or volunteer organization.
  • Knowledge of social media trends and platform-specific content practices.

Professional social media experience is not necessarily required. Relevant volunteer, academic, freelance, personal-project, or portfolio experience may also be considered.

What You Will Gain

As a Social Media Content Creator Volunteer with Smiles Foundation, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain practical social media content creation experience within a nonprofit organization.
  • Develop portfolio-ready content and communications experience.
  • Strengthen your social media writing, storytelling, and digital-content skills.
  • Work with real nonprofit campaigns, programs, donor initiatives, and community stories.
  • Collaborate with other volunteers specializing in social media, graphic design, photography, video, communications, and digital marketing.
  • Gain experience working with a content calendar, approval process, brand standards, and organizational communications.
  • Contribute directly to increasing awareness of Smiles Foundation’s mission, programs, and community impact.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is creative, reliable, organized, and interested in using social media to support a nonprofit mission.

You should enjoy turning information and stories into concise, engaging social media content and be comfortable working within an established content calendar and review process.

You do not necessarily need extensive professional experience. We welcome applicants who can demonstrate creativity, strong communication skills, attention to detail, reliability, and a willingness to learn.

Because this position supports Smiles Foundation’s public communications, volunteers must be comfortable following organizational guidelines, incorporating feedback, and meeting agreed deadlines.
