About Toronto Metropolitan University
At the intersection of mind and action, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is on a transformative path to becoming Canada’s leading comprehensive innovation university. Integral to this path is the placement of equity, diversity and inclusion as fundamental to our institutional culture. Our current academic plan outlines each as core values and we work to embed them in all that we do.
We welcome those who have demonstrated a commitment to upholding the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion and will assist us to expand our capacity for diversity in the broadest sense. In addition, to correct the conditions of disadvantage in employment in Canada, we encourage applications from members of groups that have been historically disadvantaged and marginalized, including First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples, Indigenous peoples of North America, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and those who identify as women and/or 2SLGBTQ+. Please note that all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
In April 2022, the university announced our new name of Toronto Metropolitan University, which will be implemented in a phased approach. Learn more about our next chapter.
The Team:
Consent Comes First: The Office of Sexual Violence Support and Education (CCF) provides free, confidential, trauma-informed, healing-centred support to TMU students of all genders affected by sexual violence and other forms of gender-based violence. We operate in Toronto, on the 'Dish With One Spoon Territory’. The Dish With One Spoon is a treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee.
Together with campus partners and the broader community, CCF provides education, case management and advocacy to foster a world free from gender-based violence. CCF creates opportunities for students affected by violence to cultivate safety, healing and leadership on their own terms. We believe that students affected by sexual and gender-based violence should guide their healing process and we are here to listen and provide options in a trauma-informed way. We know that survivors are targeted for, heal from, and address sexual violence and gender-based violence differently as this is shaped by their intersecting social locations, e.g. class, sexuality, citizenship status and gender expression. Our services are available to all students of the TMU community regardless when and where the violence occurred.
The Opportunity
The successful candidate will have a dual role within the Consent Comes First (CCF) office at Toronto Metropolitan University. As part of their responsibilities, they will take the lead in supporting SafeSay, a new anonymous disclosure platform launching in 2026 that provides confidential information and guidance to TMU students affected by sexual violence and gender-based violence (SV/GBV). SafeSay is not a reporting mechanism, but rather a low-barrier support option that allows students to explore their rights, available services, and possible next steps on their own terms. The successful candidate will host the platform for part of their week, with the support of the CCF team, and help shape best practices in anonymous, trauma-informed support. The remainder of the role involves providing direct support to students through case management services. Under the guidance of the Associate Director, this position plays a critical role in fostering a campus where consent comes first and survivors are supported with care, dignity, and respect. The person in this role will:
- Lead the SafeSay anonymous support platform, responding to student inquiries during scheduled shifts, maintaining up-to-date internal and external support information, and helping shape and evaluate best practices for anonymous support services.
- Conduct trauma-informed intake and needs assessments with individuals affected by SV/GBV, recognizing the impact of intersecting identities and systemic barriers.
- Provide individualized case management and emotional support to TMU students affected by SV/GBV, including safety planning, systems navigation, and culturally responsive referrals to on- and off-campus services.
- Support student survivors in understanding and navigating various internal and external reporting options (e.g., TMU complaint processes, police), centering choice, autonomy, and informed decision-making.
- Co-create personalized safety and self-care plans in collaboration with students and other campus community members, rooted in harm reduction and survivor-defined goals.
- Provide advocacy and accompaniment through institutional processes, including legal, academic, housing, and health-related systems, to help reduce barriers to access and justice.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely documentation in accordance with professional and institutional standards.
- Work collaboratively with campus partners (e.g., Student Wellbeing, Human Rights Services, academic departments) to provide holistic support and contribute to a coordinated institutional response to SV/GBV.
- Support the learning of placement MSW/BSW placement students.
- Assist students in accessing appropriate academic and workplace accommodations in relation to their experiences of SV/GBV, including navigating institutional processes.
- Support and sometimes lead CCF community programming, education and engagement both in person and virtual including consent trainings, SafeSay workshops, tabling.
- Create accessible, inclusive, and community-informed resources related to consent, support, and student survivor well-being.
- Work with student volunteers on the Consent Action Team.
- Participate in policy review, protocol creation and updates related to SV/GBV.
- Support CCF in leading campus outreach, education and engagement activities.
