Position Title: Scarborough Active Living Program Coordinator
Reports to: Senior Manager Education and Community Programs
Role Overview
The Scarborough Active Living Program Coordinator is an exciting new position at Alzheimer Society of Toronto. This role will be responsible for expanding and delivering inclusive, culturally responsive
social recreation programs for individuals living with dementia and their care partners in Scarborough.
The role leads community outreach, builds partnerships, and co-designs programming with diverse communities—including but not limited to Chinese, Tamil, Bengali, and Filipino populations—to ensure activities reflect local languages, traditions, and cultural values. This position is also responsible for program logistics, budgets and statistics.
The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years’ relevant work experience and in-depth knowledge of existing social services, multicultural community groups, and program partners in Scarborough.
Work location: Mid Scarborough Hub (primary), with occasional work at partner sites, and our main office at 20 Eglinton West.
Key Responsibilities - What You’ll Be Doing:
- Active Living Program
- Contribute to the development of Active Living Programs including creating program plans, promotion, and evaluations.
- Outreach and partnership building to community agencies, and contracted in services to collaborate on Active Living Programs service delivery for language and cultural groups
- Conduct and coordinate community-based programs for clients to carry out identified therapeutic recreation programs (music, creative arts, physical activity and social) as well as providing respite for the caregiver.
- Complete assessments of potential clients, determine eligibility and connect clients to pertinent programs and services.
- Assist and monitor Active Living Program budget.
- Maintain client records, program documentation, attendance, and reporting and adhere to program standards and Alzheimer Society policies and procedures.
- Education and Community Involvement
- Deliver orientation and training to contracted Active Living Program Facilitators, partners and volunteers
- Provide leisure wellness education and strategies to families and/or in-home care providers regarding appropriate, meaningful, and client-centered activities.
- Provide education to a variety of target groups regarding therapeutic recreation for persons living with dementia, which may include making public presentations.
- Act as a resource for inquiries from the public regarding therapeutic recreation.
- Represent the Alzheimer Society and people affected by dementia on community committees in Scarborough as requested.
- Participate in organizational events and activities as required, as well as in ongoing professional development activities.
Expectations - What You Bring:
Education and Experience
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Recreation and Leisure, Gerontology, Activation, other health disciplines or related fields are required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.
- Three (3) to Five (5) years’ relevant experience:
- Working with persons living with dementia and their families from Scarborough’s diverse communities.
- Designing recreational programs, facilitating group activities, and delivering exercise and/or fitness training and facilitation.
- Knowledge of community health care agencies and social services in Scarborough.

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:
- As English is the primary working language at the Alzheimer Society, exceptional written and verbal communication skills is required.
- Bilingual or multilingual - effective verbal and written communication skills in languages spoken by one or more of Scarborough’s diverse communities is a strong asset
- Knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to work cooperatively with volunteers, staff, and community partners.
- Enthusiastic, empathetic, professional who is a positive thinker and self-starter.
- Energetic, adaptable individual with the ability to organize multiple programs and clients.
- Effective time management, planning, and prioritization skills.
- Current Standard First Aid/CPR certification; Food Handlers Certification is an asset
- Special interest hobbies that can be offered as a program are an asset.
Employment Conditions
- Work status: Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Experience gained in Canada or internationally is valued.
- Travel requirements: Regular travel between Scarborough Hub and partner sites is required. Access to a reliable vehicle is required.
- Physical demands: May involve standing for extended periods, occasionally performing light lifting (up to 20 kg), and facilitating group exercise activities.
Total Compensation / What We Offer:
- Hiring salary range: $55,000 - $63,000.
- Paid time off: Paid Vacation (15 days), sick leave (18 days), personal days (2) & Equity Floater days (3) per fiscal year (prorated from start date)
- Benefits: Comprehensive group benefits after three months and pension plan after 1 year of service.
- Work arrangement: Hybrid work (in office & remote), minimum of 2 days per week at the Scarborough Hub. Full-time, permanent position (35 hours/week)
