
Residential Services Inspector
Habitat Services strives to improve, preserve, and increase deeply affordable housing for tenants marginalized by poverty and their mental health status, by contracting with landlords and providing recovery-based support. Habitat Services funds and monitors boarding homes and apartment units at sites across the city of Toronto.
The Residential Services Inspector (RSI) works as part of the Contract Monitoring Program. RSIs are responsible for monitoring and documenting contract standards in Habitat-funded homes. RSI's complete building/food inspections, as well as liaise with home operators, boarding home staff, tenants, on-site support services and other service providers to mediate conflict, help resolve issues, and improve the quality of life for individuals living in boarding homes and self-contained units. RSIs also ensure the Residential Tenancies Act is being followed and that the rights & responsibilities of the landlords and tenants are being upheld. RSI's facilitate dispute meetings with owners/operators and tenants as needed, as well as documenting and investigating complaints, and monitoring compliance.
Successful applicants will have:
- Experience working in a housing program and/or setting.
- Experience working with People with Lived or Living Experience of the Mental Health and Addiction systems.
- Experience negotiating and mediating in difficult circumstances.
- Related post-secondary school education or equivalent experience.
- Problem-solving skills, including ability to identify/participate in the resolution of issues/problems.
- Good knowledge of the mental health system and community resources in Toronto and understanding of the needs of People with Lived or Living Experience of the Mental Health and Addiction systems.
- Good documentation, organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to follow Infection, Prevention and Control (IPAC) protocols & guidelines, including wearing a mask where required, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed.
- Ability to work in partnership with other service providers and/or consumers/survivors.
- Understanding of issues related to poverty and homelessness.
- Experience monitoring service standards through building inspections and/or food inspections is an asset.
- Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act is an asset.
- A second language is an asset.
- Personal lived and/or living experience with the mental health and addictions systems and/or with homelessness is an asset.

The work of an RSI involves travel (by own vehicle or TTC) to different sites in the city of Toronto, and moderate physical activity such as climbing stairs to complete inspections.
