The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has been serving our neighbours in need in the Greater Toronto Area since 1850, providing material aid, programs, and services. Our present-day programs and services include emergency shelters, supportive housing, transitional housing, recovery homes, and summer camp opportunities for children.
Additionally, we operate three community-based houses in Scarborough that provide permanent homes for adults with developmental and physical challenges.
Residents are supported to have their physical, emotional and spiritual needs met while providing an atmosphere that respects the uniqueness of each individual. Residents are encouraged and supported to be active, engaged members of the community.
Residential Counsellors play a significant role in creating safe, inclusive, and meaningful home environments for the residents in our care. They support individuals in their daily lives, promote independence, and ensure each person’s rights, choices and goals are respected. Residential counsellors work as part of a collaborative team committed to high-quality, person-centred care that embraces the spirit of Christian commitment.
We are currently seeking to fill the following staffing vacancies:
Job Title: Residential Counsellor
Position Type: Permanent Full Time
Number of Positions Available: 4
Hours: Rotating day and evening shifts, including some weekends and holidays; 40 hours/week
Location: Scarborough, ON
Start Date: As soon as possible
Salary: $26. /Hour

Job responsibilities for this position will include:
•Supporting individuals with daily living activities, including hygiene, bathing, dressing, meal preparation, laundry and mobility and ensuring that any documented protocols are accurately followed
•Developing and implementing Individual Support Plans including goal planning of long and short-term goals
•Ensuring the completion of resident monthly summaries and six month ISP reviews, complying with policies, procedures and timelines
•Encouraging independence through skill-building, respectful coaching and positive encouragement
•Following implemented individualized behaviour support plans including care protocols, using positive, proactive strategies
•Assisting individuals with emotional regulation and coping skills
•Administering medication, including those considered controlled acts, according to agency policies, Physician/Pharmacist’s directives, and training received
•Maintaining a clean, safe, and accessible home environment
•Following emergency procedures and participating in/leading crisis response when required
•Supporting residents to achieve the goals they have identified
•Facilitating life skills development such as budgeting, cooking, communication, relationship building and performing household tasks such as laundry, setting, and clearing the table, etc.
•Completing daily logs, incident reports, and communication notes accurately and on time
•Maintaining confidentiality and upholding agency standards and policies for record-keeping
•Participating in meal planning and preparation, and completing all household tasks such as kitchen management, laundry, etc.
•Identifying and addressing barriers to inclusion or accessibility
•Providing leadership, direction, and training to all staff as requested, inclusive of new hires and staff who do not typically work the day and evening shifts, as well as volunteers and student placements
•Following agency policies, licensing requirements, and ethical guidelines
Qualifications:
• Developmental Services Worker Diploma/Certificate or equivalent post-secondary education
• Current certification in 1st Aid & CPR and CPI
• Experience working with individuals who have developmental disabilities, preferably in a residential setting
• Demonstrated ability to work as an effective and cooperative team member
• Demonstrated solid problem solving and assessment skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated ability and commitment to providing services in a compassionate and non- judgemental manner
• Computer literacy in Microsoft 365, Word, Outlook, etc.
• Proven documentation skills and abilities
• Comfortable with personal care and behavioural support for vulnerable individuals
• A valid class ‘G’ driver’s license with a clear driver’s abstract is preferred for this position and will be considered during the selection process

This position may involve working in an environment with pets and there is likely exposure to bodily fluids, unpleasant odors and or pests. Employees are expected to balance the challenge of working in a casual environment while maintaining professional conduct. Employees will refrain from personal use of cell phones while on shift.
