Peer Outreach Educators (Nail Salon Workers Project) Part-time positions of up to 6 months, with the possibility of extension Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre (PQWCHC) is a dynamic, community-based health care organization that has historically served mid-west downtown Toronto, and now provides outreach services to across the entire city. Offering a broad range of services, including primary health care, dental care, harm reduction, health promotion, counselling, and community development programming, we are also committed to serving people who face barriers to health care, and we strive to reduce these barriers. PQWCHC is a multi-sited organization.
Project Overview The Nail Salon Workers Project (an initiative of PQWCHC) has received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) in collaboration with the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. The project focuses on building safer nail salons by addressing health and employment issues and anti-Asian Racism that exists in the sector. The project will continue to support the development of the Nail Technicians Network (NTN) by: providing outreach to nail technicians, engaging nail technicians in training opportunities, and providing opportunities to advocate for better working conditions. Peer Outreach Educators will be the first point of contact for nail technicians and owners throughout the project. Peer Outreach Educators will be required to participate in training on workers’ rights, community engagement, community-based research, (qualitative) research methods, Microsoft 365 applications, and facilitation. Applicants are expected to be interested in learning, eager to develop new skills and excited to participate in these trainings. Applicants do not need experience or knowledge in these areas. Responsibilities:
ï· Outreach to nail salon workers in downtown Toronto ï· Engage nail technicians and invite them to participate in interviews, workshops, and NTN membership ï· Participate in training sessions as listed in the Project Overview ï· Conduct community-based research (specific training will be provided) ï· Deliver workshops to nail technicians about workplace health issues (specific training will be provided) ï· Support nail technicians with information and referrals ï· Collaborate with project coordinators about all aspects of project activities ï· Liaise with project team and nail technicians ï· Carry out administrative tasks as needed ï· Use Microsoft 365 for data collection and tracking project activities (specific training will be provided)
Qualifications:
ï· Lived experience or demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the discount nail salon sector ï· Ability to write and speak in English ï· Ability to write and speak Korean is an asset ï· Ability to use computers and social media ï· A good understanding of the challenges facing new immigrants and nail technicians ï· Travel in and around Toronto is a must (no car needed)
