MOVER/DRIVER VOLUNTEER

About Shelter Movers

Shelter Movers is a national, volunteer-powered charitable organization providing moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We collaborate with local businesses and community agencies to support people, primarily women and children, as they transition to a life free of violence.

Do you want to make a big impact, but you’re short on time? This is the job for you!

As a Mover or Driver, you’ll be at the heart of our mission, physically moving the client’s belongings into a vehicle and transporting to a predetermined location. Each move consists of a group of 2-7 movers to assist with loading and unloading. Vehicles are provided for the move, and movers who have a valid driver’s license are welcome to register as drivers.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet your team at the scheduled time and location.
  • Follow the Lead Mover and Move Coordinator’s directions, and maintain clear communication with the Lead Mover and other movers to ensure a smooth, safe move.
  • Handle clients' belongings with care as you move in and out of vehicles, and transport them to a predetermined location.
  • Uphold Shelter Movers’ protocols and procedures

Short Commitment, Big Impact:

  • Each move varies from 3-5 hours
  • Flexible Scheduling: Time commitment is based on a per-move basis. Volunteers can work around their schedule and sign up for moves based on their availability.

*minimum of 1-2 moves per month (6-10 hours) is encouraged.

Required Skills

  • Passion for Shelter Movers’ mission of supporting individuals fleeing violence and abuse
  • Able to lift moderately heavy boxes/furniture
  • Ability to respect client/volunteer confidentiality
  • Awareness of appropriate boundaries, compassion fatigue and self-care
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • An interest in the Gender Based Violence (GBV) sector is an asset
