About us

CRC Self Help Inc. is a not-for-profit housing organization whose goal is to provide affordable, independent housing in a shared house setting to low-income single adults in Toronto.

We are currently seeking a Facilitative Housing Worker (FHW). Candidates will be responsible for a portfolio of up to eight houses and the facilitative management thereof. Candidates must have an understanding of poverty and homelessness in our society and are able to understand the systemic causes that give rise to these problems.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to Senior Management, the FHW will work to establish and develop a self-managing community of low-income singles in a shared accommodations type setting. This entails but is not limited to, assisting with tenant/tenancy management and providing administration and maintenance oversight of the property.

Main Responsibilities in the areas of (but not limited to):

  • Community Development: build community within the house and work with the residents within that community to achieve individual and group goals/objectives. Provide initial crisis intervention, mediation and conflict resolution as required to foster a positive living experience within the house and the broader community.
  • Individual Tenant Support: become familiar with each resident in order to help them formulate goals/objectives both personally and in the housing community as a whole; assist each resident to become aware of all the social services available to them in the larger community.
  • Administration: tenancy administration i.e. fill vacancies through our internal wait list; collect rents and manage tenant arrears; ensure all materials relating to tenancy are provided; prepare and delivery letters/notices as needed on behalf of CRC Self-Help; prepare daily reports on each property in the portfolio; after-hours pager management; required to be in-office one or more days a week; liaise/collaborate with community agencies as required to support tenants.
  • Property Management: responsible for all matters relating to the management of the properties; become familiar with properties in order to identify and monitor all areas to determine any possible maintenance concerns and report on them; assist tenants in each house to meet preventative maintenance needs and,
  • Assist with any other job duties as maybe assigned from time to time.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a social service-related program.
  • Preferably two years of experience working in a social/community service organization, working with low income or homeless singles and those living with substance abuse and/or mental illness.
  • Have knowledge of the shared housing model with a broad knowledge of community-based resources and supports along with experience in group facilitation settings.
  • Experience working within a not-for-profit, community-based agency is an asset, along with knowledge of Social Housing Model, the Residential Tenancies Act and PIPEDA.
  • Demonstrate an ability to provide crisis intervention, mediation, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
  • Able to write reports, correspondences etc. efficiently using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, along with ability to use/have knowledge of database program (please specify which program in your cover letter).
  • Have a strong work ethic that allows you to work/function independently and as a member of a team and,
  • Have a well-developed ability to prioritize work through short- and long-term goals and remain flexible in reaching those goals.

Travel to various properties in the GTA is required (car not required).
