Legal Volunteer: Document Review & Governance Support

Position type: Volunteer (Advisory and support role; does not replace external legal counsel).
Time Commitment: Approximately 5 hours per week, flexible. Fully remote.


Purpose of the Role: To support Universal Limbs Foundation in managing day-to-day legal and governance matters by reviewing internal documents, ensuring basic compliance, and helping streamline organizational policies. This volunteer role complements our external legal counsel and helps strengthen the nonprofit’s daily legal and administrative efficiency.

K E Y R E S P O N S I B I L I T I E S :

Document Drafting, Review & Organization:

  • Draft, review, and refine internal documents, including agreements, partnership templates, waivers, policies, and governance materials.
  • Help identify unclear language, missing sections, or areas that may need further review.
  • Support the organization and tracking of legal and governance documents in shared folders or document registers.

Governance Support:

  • Assist in creating and refining governance documents such as bylaws, board policies, meeting templates, committee terms of reference, and internal procedures.
  • Help ensure decisions, resolutions, and basic governance records are documented clearly and consistently.
  • Support preparation of materials related to regulatory filings, annual returns, or board approvals as needed.

Compliance & Risk Awareness:

  • Flag possible legal, governance, or policy concerns in internal documents or organizational practices.
  • Help update or maintain policies such as conflict of interest, confidentiality, and data protection.
  • Support alignment between day-to-day practices and the organization’s governance expectations.

Coordination & Advisory Support:

  • Act as a thoughtful sounding board for leadership on document-related or governance-related questions.
  • When needed, help prepare materials that can be reviewed by external legal counsel.
  • Communicate feedback in clear, plain language that non-legal team members can easily understand.

Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S & S K I L L S :

  • Background or studies in law (e.g., law student, paralegal, or legal professional).
  • Interest in nonprofit, corporate or Canadian legal frameworks.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort drafting and reviewing written materials.
  • Clear and professional communicator, able to explain legal or governance concepts simply.
  • Reliable, organized, and able to handle sensitive information responsibly.
  • Experience with nonprofit operations, board governance, or document management is an asset.
