Director, Membership & Operations
Help shape the next chapter of a national association.
We’re a prominent national association with an ambitious agenda, a strong community and a clear eye on the future. We’re looking for a Director, Membership & Operations, who can help us turn strategy into momentum.
This is not a “keep the trains running” operations role.
We’re looking for someone who sees membership growth and operational excellence as two sides of the same coin – someone who can think strategically about where the organization is going while making sure we have the people, systems, processes, and discipline to get there.
Reporting to the President & CEO and serving as a key member of the Leadership Team, you’ll provide leadership across membership strategy and organizational operations. You’ll also be an important thought partner in identifying opportunities for growth, partnerships, and new revenue.
What you’ll get to do:
Build membership for the future.
Develop and oversee a multi-year strategy for membership growth, engagement, and retention. Establish meaningful KPIs, use data to understand what’s working (and what isn’t), and enable the membership team to deliver results.
Make a good organization work even better.
Strengthen the operational foundation that allows a national organization to perform at its best. You’ll oversee financial performance and internal controls and provide leadership across HR, IT, external vendors, policies, and risk management.
Have a voice at the leadership table.
You won’t simply execute someone else’s plan. You’ll be expected to bring ideas, ask good questions, challenge assumptions, and contribute to organization-wide planning, innovation, and performance.
Lead people – not just portfolios.
Provide clarity, coaching, and support to team members while fostering collaboration across membership, operations, programming, and engagement. We’re a small team, which means titles matter less than the willingness to roll up your sleeves when needed.
Represent the organization externally.
Build relationships across the association community, maintain important industry, and partner connections, and help strengthen the organization’s visibility and influence.
You might be our person if…
You’re a strategic thinker who also knows how to get things done.
You understand that a great member experience depends on what happens behind the scenes just as much as what members see.
You’re comfortable with budgets and KPIs, but you also understand people, relationships, and organizational culture.
You can move easily between a leadership-team conversation about long-term growth and a practical conversation about a process, system or vendor that needs fixing.
And you genuinely enjoy working in an environment where collaboration, curiosity, and a little resourcefulness go a long way.
Ideally, you bring:
- 7–10 years of progressive experience in membership, operations or association management;
- Demonstrated success developing and executing strategies that drive growth, engagement and retention;
- Experience building strong relationships with members, partners and other key constituencies;
- Strong financial and operational acumen, including experience with budgets and vendor relationships;
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills;
- A post-secondary education in business administration, management or a related area, or equivalent experience; and
- A CAE designation would be considered an asset.
A little about how we work
We are a virtual organization, so your commute may be considerably shorter than it used to be.
Our team works remotely, with opportunities to connect in person throughout the year. This role will require some travel within Canada for meetings, events, and other organizational activities.
We offer a salary range of $105,000-$115,000, commensurate with experience, along with a solid comprehensive benefits package.
Most importantly, you’ll join an organization where the work matters, the ideas are welcome, and there is real opportunity to make an impact.
