ABOUT TREK FOR TEENS
The Trek for Teens Foundation is an entirely youth-led and volunteer-run charity that focuses on raising funds and awareness for youth experiencing homelessness in Canada. We strongly believe in youth helping youth, and therefore our team is primarily made up of post-secondary students and young professionals across multiple cities in Ontario and Quebec. We strive to ensure our team member's personal growth is aligned to their work at the charity, and that they are able to develop professionally through our organization.
DESCRIPTION
The Director of Human Resources is responsible for leading the overall HR strategy at Trek for Teens and overseeing the organization’s recruitment, onboarding, training, development, engagement, retention, and personnel practices. The Director works closely with the Executive Team and HR leadership team to ensure HR initiatives support the organization’s goals and foster an equitable, supportive, and engaged environment for staff and volunteers.
The Director provides strategic direction and support to the Hiring Manager, Training Manager, and People & Culture Manager, working collaboratively with each portfolio lead to establish priorities, develop initiatives, assess HR needs, and ensure consistency across HR functions. The Director provides guidance and oversight while empowering each manager to lead their respective portfolio.
The Director oversees full-cycle recruitment and onboarding, including position descriptions, hiring materials, recruitment processes, interviews, selection, hiring documentation, and orientation. They also provide oversight of organization-wide training and development initiatives in partnership with the Training Manager and Executive Team.
The Director supports employee and volunteer engagement, retention, and performance management, including overseeing engagement and exit surveys, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement, supporting performance management processes, and developing initiatives that strengthen personnel retention and development.
The Director is also responsible for HR policies, procedures, and personnel administration, ensuring practices are consistent, equitable, and aligned with applicable legislation and organizational standards. They maintain accurate personnel records, organizational charts, and HR documentation while providing HR guidance and support to department leaders and personnel as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in regular meetings with the VP Operations, with your team, and attend monthly executive meetings (2nd Saturday of the month in the mornings)
- Participate in the recruitment of your team and lead your respective team
- Lead the direction of all portfolios under HR (Training, Hiring, People and Culture)
- Lead HR strategy across departments and regions
- Act as a first point of contact for individuals interested in working for Trek for Teens
- Oversee training programs for new and existing volunteers
- Develop and disseminate hiring materials
- Maintain records of current and past personnel
QUALIFICATIONS
- Dedication to the cause of youth homelessness
- Experience in HR or related fields an asset
- Experience using Google Suite (Sheets, Docs, Admin Console) and Slack an asset
- Understanding of volunteering best practices
- Strong organizational and professional communication skills
- Experience conducting interviews
COMMITMENT
We expect a minimum commitment to this position for 1 year. However, our members often choose to remain in their position beyond their expected commitment, or transition to positions beyond their current role.
The expected weekly time commitment is 5-7 hours. This is mainly a remote position, with occasional in-person engagement. This is an entirely volunteer role.
