Skwlāx te Secwepemcúĺecw (SteS) is traditionally known as Skwlāx, which translates to Black Bear in Secwépemctsín, the traditional language. SteS has a unique vision and drive; the Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap, but it has also led the way in economic development. The creation of Quaaout Lodge, Talking Rock Golf, Le7ka Spa, and Little Shuswap Gas Station has helped promote Secwepemc culture, and allowed the SteS people to develop world class accommodation and leisure activities.

The Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap region, but has also worked to challenge stereotypes and perceptions of reserve life with a focus on community development, wellness, and cultural identity.

About the Role

The Community Health Nurse plays a vital role in advancing health and wellness across the Skwlāx community. This position leads public health programs, delivers health promotion initiatives, and provides direct support for individuals and families at every stage of life. Working with respect for cultural knowledge and Indigenous traditions, the nurse builds strong connections through home visits, community outreach, and collaborative partnerships. From immunization clinics and chronic disease prevention to mental wellness and harm reduction, the role strengthens community well-being through responsive and culturally safe care. This is a meaningful opportunity for a nursing professional who thrives on building trust, supporting wellness, and contributing to a healthier future for the community.

This is a full-time permanent position, with the opportunity for a hybrid work environment. As a majority of the role is in-person/onsite, the successful candidate is required to be located in the Skwlāx (Kamloops, Chase, Salmon Arm) region. Offering a competitive salary $80,000-$110,000, this opportunity includes a comprehensive compensation package and relocation support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate health promotion initiatives for all life stages (maternal, child, youth, adult, elder)
  • Provide culturally safe education and support on topics such as prenatal care, child development, chronic disease prevention, emotional well-being, and healthy lifestyles
  • Conduct home and community visits to assess needs, promote wellness, and build trust
  • Lead immunization and disease prevention programs in line with BCCDC and FNHA guidelines
  • Support harm reduction efforts, deliver outreach, Naloxone training, and substance use prevention education
  • Partner with Environmental Health Officers and health specialists to manage risks, outbreaks, and public health emergencies
  • Submit timely reports (monthly and annual) and use data for program planning, health monitoring, and emergency readiness

Your Toolkit

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from a recognized Canadian institution, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
  • Certification in immunization or willingness to complete certification within three months of hire
  • Valid CPR Level C certification (including infant resuscitation)
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant community or public health nursing experience, ideally in an Indigenous or rural setting
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License (unrestricted)
  • Ability to travel frequently within the community for home visits, clinics, and outreach programming
  • Maintain physical and emotional stamina while responding to the diverse and sometimes urgent health needs of community members
