Position Overview:
The New Canadians Centre Peterborough (NCC) is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to supporting immigrants and refugees in the Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton and Northumberland regions. We strive to empower immigrants and refugees to become full and equal members of Canadian society and to provide community leadership to ensure cultural integration in a welcoming community.
The Community Connections Worker – CKL is a newly created part-time position to facilitate the social inclusion of newcomers in the City of Kawartha Lakes region through community outreach and organization of activities that promote newcomer networking, community-building and support. The Community Connections Worker will work closely with other NCC staff to promote programs and activities to newcomers and liaise with community partners to provide opportunities for newcomers to orient themselves to the communities of the City of Kawartha Lakes.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Community Outreach
- Conduct an environmental scan of locations, interests and needs of local newcomers living in the City of Kawartha Lakes
- Identify key newcomer contacts and activities that already exist in the region
- Work with NCC staff to promote NCC services and activities with newcomer populations, as well as agencies working with newcomer populations
- Refer newcomers to NCC settlement services for intake and support
Community Connections
- Organize a minimum of one group activity, trip, or social event for newcomers per month that addresses the diverse needs and changing demographics of the broader newcomer community
- Work with the Manager of Community Development on the creation and implementation of program plan and budgets
- Where possible and beneficial, collaborate with NCC staff, community organizations, community members, and businesses to facilitate newcomer participation in community programs and activities led by other agencies
Volunteer Coordination
- Identify potential opportunities for volunteers to assist with the delivery of programming and coordinate with NCC Volunteer Administrator to recruit volunteers for these roles.
Outcomes Measurement
- Monitor and assess program progress, challenges, and trends, including collecting feedback from program participants
- Provide quantitative and qualitative information to meet funder reporting requirements and the NCC Annual Plan, and work to ensure program targets are met
General Responsibilities
- Support the mandate of the New Canadians Centre
- Attend relevant staff meetings, such as monthly all staff and client services meetings
- Complete documentation such as invoice submission, expense reports and timesheets in a complete timely fashion
- Create and maintain a position-specific manual
- Other duties as required
Qualifications:
Experience
- Post-secondary education in a field related to Community Development, Social Services and/or equivalent experience is required
- Experience in needs assessment and program outreach and coordination is required
- Experience with event planning and budgeting is an asset
- Familiarity with community resources in City of Kawartha Lakes is an asset
- Experience working in the non-profit sector is an asset
- Experience working with and managing volunteers is an asset
- Lived experience as a newcomer to Canada or as a member of a marginalized group, as voluntarily self-identified, is viewed favourably
Competencies
- Understanding and empathy for the struggles which immigrants, refugees and newcomers face in starting a new life in Canada
- Understanding of anti-oppressive language and concepts including power, privilege, intersectionality, and racism
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in a multi-cultural setting
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle important documents in a sensitive manner
- Adaptability and responsiveness to client and organizational needs
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, work well in a busy environment

- Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records, write reports and meet deadlines
- Proficient in use of computers including office-related software, electronic mail, website and social media technology, and data management

Other
- Current Criminal Reference Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’ s License, and access to a vehicle required
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings
- Ability and willingness to travel to related seminars, conferences, training, meetings, etc.
