Call for applications to the Green Thumb Growing Kids’ Board of Directors

Green Thumbs Growing Kids runs school garden programs that provide all ages and all backgrounds with a variety of settings such as native/naturalized plantings, meadow ecosystems, native tree species in their own mini-nurseries, and small-scale agriculture including production of kid-friendly small fruits and vegetables, aerobic/thermal and worm composting. When the weather gets cold, we bring the garden inside through classroom workshops on topics related to food and the environment. In early spring our programs move to a City of Toronto greenhouse, where children and youth start the seeds for their gardens. We have a Partnership Agreement with the Toronto District School Board and serve a cluster of schools; three elementary and one secondary at this time, as well as leading one-off workshops for schools and community members.

Sunday Harrison, our Executive Director, started Green Thumbs Growing Kids in 1999 from a passion for growing food and increasing children’s access to nature in the city. She completed a Masters in Environmental Studies and graduate diploma in Environmental and Sustainability Education at York University in 2014. She is familiar with Ontario curriculum expectations and along with staff continually learns how to integrate garden-based learning into many subjects.

We are a working board that follows up on goals set forth in our Strategic plan, yet nimble and adaptable to circumstances/opportunities as they arise. All board members are asked to be ambassadors – be it fundraising through individual networks, participating in events, or facilitating donor relationships. Any fundraising skills, knowledge and experience are highly valued. Board terms run for two years and may be renewed once.

This is a call for board applications as we look to fill vacant Treasurer position. We are seeking an experienced individual with a background in financial management to join our board’s Finance Committee. The work of the Committee includes monitoring GTGK’s financial position, reviewing monthly financial statements, preparing financial policies for the organization, and providing oversight in the preparation of our annual budget and financial statements.

We are looking for individuals who can commit approximately 8-12 hours per month to attend meetings, actively participate in committees, represent Green Thumbs at community events, and assist with board projects to help us carry out our Strategic Plan. Our Audited Financial Statements and Annual Reports are available on our website.
