Surrey Women’s Centre is CHANGING THE DEFINITION OF VICTIM by providing a wide range of Crisis, Court and Counselling services to individuals who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other forms of gender-based violence.

We are a crisis centre located in Surrey, British Columbia and work in collaboration with the medical and justice communities for the safety and care of survivors and children escaping violence. Our goal is to see gender-based violence diminish and one day disappear from our cultural lexicon. This is a volunteer opportunity.

Purpose of the Position

The Board of Directors are responsible for setting policy and strategy to support the organization’s vision, mission, and values. Directors work with other members of the board and executive leadership to carry out the mission of the Surrey Women’s Centre (“SWC”).

The Board upholds its legal responsibility for approving organizational positions/policies, while ensuring accountability, transparency, and sound governance. All work is conducted through an intersectional feminist, anti-oppression, and decolonized lens.

About You

The ideal candidate is committed to support SWC in advancing safety, dignity, and systemic change for those escaping violence. You are collaborative, values-driven, and able to contribute time, expertise, and perspective to strengthen the organization’s governance.

At this time, we are particularly seeking candidates with expertise in:

• Fundraising and philanthropy

• Social enterprise development

• Marketing and public relations

• Government relations and public policy

We also strongly encourage applicants with lived experience relevant to the Centre’s work and candidates who bring perspectives including those living with disabilities, Indigenous, racialized and LGBTQQIA2S+ folks and other equity deserving groups.

Key Responsibilities

Board Directors are expected to:

- Commit to the vision, mission, and values SWC.

- Demonstrate fiduciary, ethical, and legal responsibilities.

- Attend and actively engage in monthly Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting.

- Participate on at least one committee.

- Arrive prepared to meetings, having prepared background materials.

- Support fundraising and development activities, including leveraging networks where possible.

- Serve as an ambassador for SWC in the community, promoting our programs and values.

- Support and attend special events and organizational campaigns.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Ability to think strategically and make timely, quality decisions.

- Adaptability and creativity.

- Collaborative and respectful approach to working with others.

- Recognition of the value that different perspectives and cultures bring to an organization.

- Working knowledge of feminist social justice movements and/or experience in the community based sector.

- Specific experience in one or more of the priority areas (fundraising, social enterprise, marketing/PR, government relations/public policy) is considered an asset.
