ABOUT US
The Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN), established in 1998, is a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the health and lives of people living with and at risk of HIV by using data and evidence to drive change. We work with three main types of partners -- 1) testing programs and clinics; 2) AIDS service and other community-based organizations; and 3) policy and system leaders within and beyond the health sector – to support the implementation of the provincial HIV strategy, priorities, and directions.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Director of Science (Data, Knowledge Transfer and Exchange) is the scientific lead at the OHTN responsible for executing the research agenda for the organization, with a focus on HIV epidemiological science, data management and dissemination. This role supports initiatives within the organization to develop novel findings, manage key data assets, and disseminate findings in both lay publications and peer-reviewed manuscripts. This individual serves as a member of the senior leadership team at the OHTN, leads and mentors staff, engages and supports relationships with external interest holders and researchers; and mentors students and trainees in HIV and epidemiological research. The Senior Director of Science, Data and KTE must maintain a relationship with an academic institution.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership:
- Provides scientific leadership in the execution of the OHTN research agenda.
- Leads engagement and establishes research partnerships with external interest holders.
- Serves on OHTN internal research committees, working groups, and ad hoc think tanks to provide scientific insight and represent the status of the HIV epidemic in Ontario.
- Serves as a leader in HIV epidemiology and surveillance in Ontario, available to interest holders to guide research, evaluation and monitoring activities.
- Represents HIV epidemiology for Ontario in national and international settings.
- Provides leadership, mentorship and coaching to staff.
Research and Epidemiology
- Develops, maintains and improves systems for monitoring trends in all aspects of the HIV epidemic in Ontario to provide data for program planning and evaluation and to alert community and research partners and policymakers of emerging issues.
- Leads the research programs (internal and external) of the OHTN.
- Provides technical and scientific support to external partners, including clinicians, service providers, policy makers, researchers and mentees in the development of HIV research initiatives and surveillance.
Evidence sharing and Knowledge Translation
- Provides evidence to the external partners, including the research community, and advice and support to health policy decision-makers and front-line providers in health care and communitybased care to inform the development of policies that will help reduce HIV stigma, respond to the epidemic, and enhance HIV prevention, testing, access-to-care programs, and retention in care.
- Delivers relevant and applicable knowledge to diverse audiences using a variety of formats (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, policy papers, scientific and community presentations, priority population fact sheets, online resources).
- Shares findings using a range of communication tools, including presentations, blog posts, reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Administrative:
- Supervises directors and other direct reports, including students as needed.
- Oversees the data sharing and KTE activities of the OHTN, including the development and maintenance of relationships with ethics boards and partner institutions.
- Oversees the data infrastructure at OHTN, including data linkage activities, budget, productivity, and data-related training and management.
- Maintains relationships and fulfills MOUs and contracts with key partner agencies.
Data assets
- Ensures all data assets are held in compliance with Ontario privacy law.
- Supervises data collection and quality assurance activities.
- Oversees the development of data collection and maintenance platforms.
ABOUT YOU
- Doctoral degree in epidemiology, health sciences, or a related field.
- Hold an academic appointment and/or conduct academic service.
- A minimum of 10 years of strategic leadership in a public health or relevant research setting.
- HIV/AIDS experience/knowledge, including research, HIV epidemiology and effective community and public health responses.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in the design, implementation and conduct of epidemiologic research studies and their interpretation.
- Experienced in using different research methods and methodologies, including cross-sectional and longitudinal methods.
- Experienced in the management and analysis of large datasets, including administrative health system or surveillance data.
- Established track record in delivering presentations, writing reports, and publishing findings for a variety of interest holders.
- Expert knowledge of concepts and procedures related to safeguarding the privacy of health information.
- Demonstrated skills in epidemiologic and statistical analysis methods and use of appropriate software (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS).
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience managing and leading in a unionized environment.
- Fluency in French and other languages is an asset.
- Lived experience with HIV is an asset.
