Position Description:
Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa is seeking two board members to begin three-year terms starting in June of 2026. Board members serve in partnership with fellow directors to provide strategic leadership and governance oversight for all activities of Habitat Greater Ottawa Directors participate in board committees and contribute to the development of affiliate policy in areas including governance, strategy, finance, and community engagement.

At a time of increasing housing needs, Habitat Greater Ottawa is positioning itself to expand its reach, strengthen partnerships and pursue innovative approaches to meet this moment with purpose and ambition.
As part of this recruitment cycle, the Board is specifically seeking candidates who bring either:
- A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, with demonstrated experience in financial oversight, audit, risk management, or financial governance.
- Professional designation and/or demonstrated expertise in communications, marketing, media relations, or branding strategy with a record of accomplishment in translating organizational priorities into clear, compelling narratives that increase visibility, deepen community engagement, and support strategic growth.
In our ongoing efforts to build a diverse and inclusive Board with varied experiences and perspectives, we are especially interested in recruiting individuals representing the communities we serve (i.e. families that need assistance with housing) and other equity-seeking groups such as Racialized, Black and/or People of Colour, bilingual, Persons with Disabilities, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and Indigenous Peoples.
A sample of board members’ duties are:
- Providing strategic leadership and oversight to ensure Habitat Greater Ottawa advances its mission and long-term goals.
- Approving and monitoring key policies, financial plans, and risk management practices to safeguard the Affiliate’s sustainability and integrity.
- Hiring, supporting, and evaluating the Chief Executive Officer, ensuring strong leadership and accountability in achieving strategic priorities.
- Ensure that the Affiliate is being operated in accordance with legal requirements, its Bylaws, and the Covenant with Habitat for Humanity Canada, and for the purposes described in its Letters Patent, in a financially solvent and secure manner.
- Strengthening the effectiveness of the Board through active engagement in recruitment, orientation, evaluation, and ongoing governance development.
Expectations of Directors:
- Serve as ambassadors for the organization.
- Commitment to attend, prepare for, and actively participate in all board meetings and other functions.
- Stay informed about the Affiliate’s activities and performance.
- Actively engage in strategic planning discussions.
- Actively support HFHGO fundraising efforts and make a personal contribution to fundraising to the best of their ability.
- Engage in ongoing learning related to governance and board responsibilities.
- Serve as a member on a board committee or advisory council.
- Time and desire to be a part of a cohesive team and collective efforts to grow Habitat Greater Ottawa’s impact.
Commitment:
- Length of Commitment: 3-year term with potential of renewal
- Estimated Hours Required: 4 - 8 hours per month
