The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) is a national bilingual, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the counselling and psychotherapy profession in Canada. The HR Practitioner plays a critical role in supporting CCPA’s mission by fostering a workplace culture that reflects our values of collaboration, diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), accessibility, and reconciliation. This position is ideal for a proactive HR professional who thrives in a nonprofit environment and can act as a trusted advisor to leadership and staff. The HR Practitioner will manage core HR functions, implement strategic initiatives, and ensure compliance with employment legislation while championing psychological safety and belonging.

The successful candidate will have strong technical HR expertise, experience with HR data management and working with payroll and benefits service providers, and a commitment to staying current with HR trends. They will be instrumental in shaping policies and practices that support organizational growth and employee engagement.

The CCPA HR Practitioner reports to CCPA’s Executive Advisor.

Duties:

Policy, Compliance & Education

  • Administer HR policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with Canadian labour laws and CCPA standards.
  • Ensure compliance with employment legislation, human rights codes, and accessibility standards (AODA).
  • Educate employees and managers on policies and procedures and ensure clarity in application.
  • Provide guidance to managers and employees on policies, procedures, and employment standards.

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Coordinate full-cycle HR processes including recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, performance management, and employee engagement.
  • Collaborate with hiring managers to identify staffing needs and ensure consistent, high-quality candidate experience.

Payroll, Benefits & HR Data

  • Partner with payroll and benefits providers during new hires, terminations, and employee changes.
  • Track probationary periods and ensure timely benefit and pension enrollments.
  • Maintain HR data accuracy and employee file integrity.
  • Support wellness initiatives and promote benefits awareness.

Employee Relations & Advisory

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to managers and employees on HR matters, including performance management and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrate discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive matters.
  • Champion CCPA’s values of inclusivity, collaboration, and professional excellence in an association atmosphere.

Culture, DEI & Engagement

  • Promote a positive workplace culture that reflects CCPA’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), cultural awareness, reconciliation, and accessibility.
  • Co-lead employee engagement initiatives in partnership with managers and assist in driving feedback and performance management processes.
  • Coordinate accessibility requests across divisions.

Development & Strategic HR

  • Coordinate professional development opportunities (individual and organizational).
  • Monitor and implement HR trends and best practices, including flexible work arrangements and mental health support.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives and support consistency across CCPA’s HR practices.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of HR experience, preferably in a nonprofit or professional association.
  • CHRP designation or equivalent is an asset.
  • Experience providing advice and guidance to executive management teams.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams and build positive relationships across the organization.
  • Proven ability to lead organizational change initiatives and support teams through transitions.
  • Experience with HR data management.
  • Bilingual (English/French) strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian employment law and accessibility standards.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize competing demands.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and judgment.

Specifications:

Compensation: $66,000 - $90,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience

Hours of Work: Full-time (37.5 hours per week). However, we recognize the value of flexibility and are open to discussing a reduced schedule (3–4 days per week) with compensation adjusted accordingly.

Duration: Permanent, with comprehensive benefits package

Language: Fluency in English is required. Fluency in French an asset.

Location: Ottawa, ON (Hybrid – combination of remote work and in-office presence). Employees are required to work on-site at the National Office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; remaining days may be worked remotely.
