Unpaid Volunteer Position
📍Location: On Site, 10 Minutes from Perth, ON (K0G 1L0)
⏳Commitment: Flexible, estimated 3 hours every other week
Role Overview
Are you passionate about animal care and interested in making a direct impact on the lives of rescued chickens? Secondhand Stories Chicken Sanctuary is looking for a dedicated volunteer to assist with the care and well-being of our rescued hens and roosters. This on-site volunteer position involves cleaning coops, preparing enrichment activities for the chickens, and assisting in chicken health care - all of which have a direct and immediate impact on the lives of the rescued chickens.
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Assist in cleaning coops and outdoor areas to maintain a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment
- Support enrichment activities to ensure the chickens have a stimulating and happy environment.
- Observing for signs of illness, injury, or behavioural changes, and reporting any concerns.
- Assisting in safely handling chickens for routine care procedures, such as nail, spur, and beak trimming, and health checks, ensuring their comfort and well-being during the process.
- Help with general maintenance of the sanctuary, including organizing supplies and helping with minor repairs.
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience with chickens or other farmed animals is an asset but not required.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold.
- Ability to lift and carry feed bags, bedding, and other supplies (up to 25 lbs)*
- Attention to detail and willingness to follow proper care procedures.
- Passion for animal welfare and a compassionate attitude.
- A criminal record check is required, at no cost to the volunteer.
*Note that none of the above skills are strictly required, and we are happy to work within your comfort!
