Position Title: COMET Program Coordinator
Position Type: Part-time Employee (6-month contract – January to June 2026)
Fairlawn Avenue United Church (Fairlawn) is seeking an enthusiastic Program Coordinator to champion and lead our COMET program. This role offers a unique opportunity to foster a supportive, affirming, secular environment for queer, trans and questioning youth and their allies to gather, learn, discuss, explore their identity, experience acceptance, and flourish.
About COMET
COMET is a free after-school drop-in program for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth ages 13-18 in North Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. The program provides youth who identify as part of the
2SLGBTQIA+ community a safe(r) and welcoming place to gather, eat a nutritious meal, take part in participant-led programming, or just come by to hang out.
This secular community program is located at 28 Fairlawn Avenue, Toronto. Fairlawn provides staffing, volunteer support and free community space.
Key Responsibilities
- Program Leadership & Operations
- Lead and oversee all aspects of the weekly COMET program, which runs on Tuesdays from 3:30pm-8:30pm.
- Oversee planning and preparation for the weekly drop-in, including organizing educational and recreational programming activities.
- Manage the overall set up and clean-up of the program space, with support from the Program Assistant and Kitchen Volunteers.
- Complete weekly program summaries suitable for use in grant submissions and reporting.
- Ensure compliance with Fairlawn policies and procedures, striving to create a safe(r), healthy space for staff, participants and volunteers.
- Staff and Volunteer Management & Development
- Supervise the Program Assistant in the planning and facilitation of weekly program activities.
- Support the recruitment and onboarding of volunteers.
- Mentor and support the Program Assistant and volunteers in their responsibilities.
- Organizational Support
- Maintain communication with Fairlawn’s Affirm Team, including preparing weekly status reports and detailed monthly time sheets.
- Collaborate as needed with Affirm Team members to brainstorm outreach and programming ideas.
- Support the research into and preparation of grant applications for program funding.
- Other duties as agreed upon with the Affirm Team.
- Marketing and Digital Communications
- Create content for and manage COMET’s social media channels (Instagram and Facebook).
- Manage and update the COMET Wix website to ensure it is current, accurate and accessible.
- Collaborate with Affirm Team Communications Coordinator to create outreach materials and share with partners.
- Develop relationships with local schools and youth service providers to build awareness and drive attendance.
- Organize and maintain digital administrative files in Google Drive to improve organizational memory and accessibility.
- Promote COMET by tabling at schools, community events and other venues as opportunities arise and time permits.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in program leadership or coordination, particularly within a youth-focused setting.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, creating an environment that fosters belonging among staff and volunteers.
- Experience in recruiting, training, and overseeing staff and volunteers.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively relay program information to participants (via social media/website) and provide reports to the Affirm Team.
- Demonstrated skills in graphic design, social media management, and website maintenance (COMET uses the Wix platform).
- Ability to manage time effectively to carry out all planning, program delivery, and administrative tasks within the specified weekly hours.
- Please note that First Aid and CPR training and a successful vulnerable sector police check will be required. Suicide prevention training is also desirable.
Work Conditions
Location: 28 Fairlawn Ave, Toronto, Tuesdays from 2:30pm-9:00pm for the drop-in program.
Other duties may be performed remotely.
Regular Hours: Up to 12 hours per week.
Position Type: Part-time (6-month contract – January to June 2026)
Hourly Wage: $23-27/hr
Benefits: Statutory vacation entitlement will be calculated as 4% of gross pay.
