YWCA JUMP Etobicoke is a new youth-centred settlement program with an employment focus which targets new, immigrant, female youth in North and Central Etobicoke who are between the ages of 13 to 24 and are within their first year of arrival. The program addresses the adaptation, settlement and integration needs of female youth through a comprehensive, settlement centre model, including: a welcome centre (settlement information, translation assistance and referrals); satellite workshops; settlement series workshops; case management; employment related services; community building. Occasional Child Minding Services is also offered.
Reporting to the Manager of YWCA JUMP Etobicoke, the Employment / Outreach Counsellor for Youth ISAP is responsible for marketing and co-ordinating the overall outreach for the program and shares responsibility for intake and offering vocational and pre-employment workshops as well as the group sessions.
You will have: in-depth knowledge of an academic or technical discipline normally acquired through completion of an undergraduate degree in Social Work, Psychology or Adult Education or equivalent; work involves application of theoretical knowledge to job-related problems; 3 to 5 years directly related work experience; group facilitation and Life Skills training necessary; ability to interpret and administer Level B testing; counselling approach that is flexible, de-escalates tension, teaches conflict resolution and is focused on success; ability to work within an anti-oppression and feminist framework; ability to deliver culturally sensitive services in a multicultural environment; demonstrated ability to work under pressure; ability to handle crisis situations effectively both in person and by telephone; strong organizational and interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, e-mail and the Internet; operates in an environment that has minimal supervision, requires high levels of flexibility, adaptability and problem solving skills and where considerable judgement and critical analysis needs to be exercised on a regular basis; ability to maintain a positive approach and a professional manner at all times; knowledge of a second language an asset (e.g. Somali, Tamil, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Mandarin). Core Competencies: engage in a self reflective and collaborative practice that is non-judgemental and compassionate and reflects the mission of YWCA Toronto; incorporate principles of anti-oppression and equity in responding to the service needs of women and children and work toward removing systemic barriers to independence and wellbeing; demonstrate respect, consideration and acceptance of the opinions of others while expressing her own expertise and effectively utilizing relevant resources and specialists; consistently collaborate with team members, sharing ideas and differences openly; be receptive to new ideas and adapt to change as necessary; value the contribution of others and take action to strengthen partnerships and support others to achieve effective outcomes; take action to avoid or solve problems and create opportunities for positive change; demonstrate commitment to ongoing personal and professional development.
The hours of work for this position are 35 hours per week (some evening and weekend work may be required). The hourly rate for this position is $23.76 per hour (level 5). Note: May be required to travel; access to a motor vehicle an asset.
