Frequency of workplace meetings
Meetings can be very useful, or a big waste of time...
Be clear about what the purpose of the meeting is in the broadest sense. Are
we getting together to build a team? Are we getting together to further our
mission? What are we trying to accomplish when six or ten or more of our most
highly compensated staff take an hour out of their day to "meet"?
Most meetings do not have an agenda, and as a result they jump all over without
clear direction and focus.
Before adjourning a meeting, make sure everyone is aware of what "action steps"
they have committed to and by what date...admin support should follow up by
email, making sure everyone is on track.
"Regular" meetings that take place among the same management team tend to
get quite routine and stale. Different people should chair meetings on a rotating
basis. This keeps everyone engaged, and helps different people take ownership
for the agenda.
