A new study by the Canada West Foundation shows that gaming grants account for more than half of the annual revenues of 20% of organizations that receive these types of grants.
Are Canadian charities and nonprofits becoming too dependent on revenues from charitable gaming and gaming grants from provincial foundations and agencies?
We operate a Transition House for the Homeless in the Lindsay area. Our Board of Directors are against accepting money from gambling revenues. However, as their fundraiser/Development Officer, I believe that we should not judge but provide a home for the homeless. Governments for years have been using sin taxes for social welfare, etc. It is a chicken and egg syndrome. Some of our churches as well have raised money through bingos, raffles, etc.
