Award: Alcan Prize for Sustainability - Alcan and The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum
Description: The Alcan Prize for Sustainability identifies and recognizes not-for-profit, civil society and non-governmental organizations for their contributions to economic, environmental and/or social sustainability. The Prize recognizes past performance and helps winning organizations continuing to contribute to and impact on sustainability through their ongoing activities.

Eligibility:

• Awarded to not-for-profit, non-governmental, and civil society organizations that are working diligently to make our world a better place.
• The International Business Leaders Forum works with many not-for-profit partners worldwide. The International Business Leaders Forum is not eligible to apply for the Alcan Prize for Sustainability. This also extends to programs or activities where the International Business Leaders Forum is one of the lead partners.
Award Type: US$1 million. In addition to the US$1 million prize to be awarded to a single organization, the adjudication panel will have the opportunity to recognize non-winning finalists by awarding Alcan Bursaries. The bursaries will be awarded at the discretion of the adjudication panel based on merit. Alcan Bursaries are redeemable for a suitably qualified senior member of staff to attend the University of Cambridge Program for Industry in England and earn a Post Graduate Certificate in Cross Sector Partnership. The course is a mix of residential and distance learning, run in partnership with International Business Leaders Forum, The Copenhagen Centre, and the University of Cambridge.
Nomination/Application Process: • Each entry must describe and demonstrate impact on at least two dimensions of sustainability – economic, environmental and/or social development. Preference will be given to organizations that are successfully advancing all three sustainability goals.
• All entries must be provided in French or English (preferred).  
• An organization may enter only one entry each year.
• Based on the principles of sustainability, electronic applications are preferred.
Deadline for Applications: The Alcan Prize for Sustainability is awarded annually. Check the Alcan website for current deadline dates.
Award: Donner Canadian Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services
Description: The Donner Awards encourage best practices and greater accountability by recognizing Canadian non-profit organizations that excel in providing social services.

Eligibility:

Nonprofit social service agencies are encouraged to apply.
Award Type: The top organizations in each of the nine categories of social service delivery will win $5,000 awards while the $20,000 William H. Donner Award for Excellence will be presented to the highest performer overall. The Donner Awards' newest honour, the $5,000 Peter F. Drucker Award for Non-Profit Management, will be presented to a non-profit organization with a consistent record of excellence and innovation in management and service delivery. Applicants receive a confidential report that compares their organization's performance to that of similar organizations allowing them to identify both areas of particular strength and areas where performance can be improved.
Nomination/Application Process: Non-profit agencies are encouraged to apply online at www.donnerawards.org. All applications completed online are eligible for the $1,000 cash draw. A PDF version of the application is also available for download on the website.

Award: Eva's Initiatives Award for Innovation
Description: The goal of the award is to recognize other organizations that are doing innovative work with youth who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness.

Eligibility:

Organizations working with homeless youth in large, medium, and smaller urban areas are encouraged to apply. Organizations working with homeless or at risk Aboriginal youth on- or off-reserve, as well as organizations operating in rural or northern communities are especially encouraged to apply.
Award Type: Three awards of $5000 each are available. Eva’s Initiatives will provide assistance to the three winning organizations to organize an awards ceremony in their communities.

Award: Kiwanis Toronto
Description: This award recognizes a Toronto charity that is undertaking a a project which will significantly impact the lives of underprivileged children and youth in Toronto.

Eligibility:

The application for this award of distinction will be available to all non-for-profit organizations with a registered charitable number, who plan to undertake a project which will significantly impact the lives of underprivileged children and youth in Toronto.
Award Type: One award of $75,000.
Nomination/Application Process: Electronic applications may be in Word (.doc) or PDF (.pdf) formats. If mailing by post, please include two paper copies. See the website for more information.

Award: Lieutenant Governor's Award - Heritage Canada
Description: Established in 1979, this award recognizes outstanding achievement in heritage conservation by an individual or group in the province/territory in which the Heritage Canada Foundation's annual conference is held.

Eligibility:

Individuals, members of heritage, historic or cultural organizations, corporations and educational institutions who have demonstrated continuous efforts in the field of preservation benefiting the province. The nominee must be sponsored by an organized heritage group and/or elected official at any level of government. Members of the board of governors and staff of Heritage Canada may only be nominated five years after their term of service has ended.
Award Type: An engraved medal and an inscribed certificate.
Nomination/Application Process:

All submissions for the Lieutenant Governor's Awards must include:
• Name, address and telephone number(s) of the nominee.
• A description of the nominee's pertinent work, not to exceed four typewritten pages (approximately 1,000 to 1,500 words).
• Biographical notes of the nominee, including a listing of projects with which the nominee has been involved (approximately one typewritten page).
• A minimum of one original photograph (professional black and white, 5" x 7") of the nominee and one quality colour slide of the nominee.
• A minimum of six original 35 mm colour slides of projects with which the nominee has been involved.
• Support material (news clippings, letters of recommendation and other slides or photographs).
• Name, address and telephone number(s) of person submitting nomination.

Award: Achievement Award - Heritage Canada
Description: Achievement Awards honour the efforts of individuals or groups for recent heritage conservation work in their province or territory. The awards are designed to be given jointly by Heritage Canada and established provincial or territorial umbrella groups or associations.

Eligibility:

Any individual or group that has completed a project or work in heritage conservation. Projects or work must demonstrate a high level of performance and must have been completed within the last two years. All nominations must be sponsored by an organized provincial or territorial heritage group that is a member of Heritage Canada and which has its own award programs. Members of the board of governors and staff of Heritage Canada may only be nominated five years after their term of service has ended.
Award Type: An inscribed medal and certificate.
Nomination/Application Process:

All submission for Achievement Awards must include:
• Name, address and telephone number(s) of the nominee.
• A one-page typewritten statement describing the work or project for which the individual or organization has been selected and the reasons for the nomination.
• A 5" x 7" photograph of the project, if applicable.
• Support material (news clippings, letters of recommendation, slides or photographs).
• Name, address and telephone number(s) of person submitting nomination.

Award: Prince of Wales Prize - Heritage Canada
Description:

Established in 1999, the Prince of Wales Prize is awarded annually to a municipal government which has shown exemplary commitment to heritage preservation within its jurisdiction.

Eligibility:

Any incorporated municipal government which has shown a commitment to heritage conservation through its recognition, protection and promotion of built heritage. The government body must be nominated by an individual or group who, in turn, is supported in writing by a local heritage organization. The nominator should in no way be directly associated with the local government in question.
Award Type: A metal plaque, a scroll and a pennant.
Nomination/Application Process:

All submissions for the Prince of Wales Prize must include:
• The proper and full name of the local government in question.
• The name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the principal elected official and/or the principal appointed official of the local government nominated.
• The name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the individual/organization making the nomination.
• The name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the primary local organization supporting the nomination.
• The names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers of other individuals and/or organizations supporting the nomination.
• No more than four typewritten pages (approximately 1,000 to 1,500 words) detailing the reasons for which the local government is nominated.
• Support material (news clippings, photographs, slides, videocassettes or other forms of written or visual information) as the nominator deems relevant to the nomination.

Award: Corporate Prize - Heritage Canada
Description: This award is to be presented annually to any incorporated business, sole proprietorship or partnership, that demonstrates outstanding stewardship of its built heritage. The foundation has long recognized that businesses of various types and sizes own many of this country's significant heritage buildings. Through the introduction of this new component of its awards program, the foundation hopes to encourage and reward sound corporate sector stewardship of heritage properties and preserve this part of our country's built heritage for future generations.

Eligibility:

Eligibility Criteria:
• Any incorporated business, sole proprietorship or partnership, large or small, may be nominated for the Corporate Prize.
• Any individual or organization may nominate a corporation, provided that the nominator is not employed by, or in any other way directly associated with, the corporation in question, so as to avoid any real or apparent conflict of interest.
• The nomination must be supported in writing by an appropriate and duly constituted heritage organization from the local area in question, and that organization must similarly be independent of the corporation nominated.
• The nomination should also be supported by other appropriate and duly constituted heritage groups - such as a relevant provincial or territorial heritage association -- similarly independent of the corporation nominated. While not essential, such additional support will add weight to the nomination and, for that reason, will be given due consideration. Consideration will also be given to expressions of support from qualified individuals independent of the corporation nominated.
• No nomination or expression of support for a nomination may be made by a serving member of the board or staff of the Heritage Canada Foundation or by a direct family member of a serving board or staff member.
• Previous nominations which did not result in the awarding of the prize to the corporation nominated may be resubmitted by following normal nomination procedures. No limit will be placed on the number of times a nomination may be resubmitted.
• No limit will be placed on the number of times a corporation may be nominated for, or awarded, the prize.
• Nominations must be accompanied by supportive materials of acceptable quality. Heritage Canada reserves the right to determine what constitutes acceptable quality and to set aside any nomination accompanied by supportive materials of unacceptable quality.
• The Heritage Canada Foundation reserves the right not to award the Corporate Prize in any year when such a measure is deemed warranted.
• The Heritage Canada Foundation reserves the right to revoke the prize when such a measure is deemed warranted.

Nomination/Application Process:

Assessment Criteria:
The corporation nominated will be assessed with regard to some or all of the following general criteria. Nominated corporations will be judged by:
• A corporate culture which embraces the preservation of heritage buildings.
• The sustained commitment to heritage conservation or an outstanding project that reflects long-term commitment.
the authenticity, aesthetics, historical integrity and or technical merit of work carried out by the nominated corporation.
• The degree of cooperation and collaboration with the heritage community.
Such other factors as the nominators and/or the jurors may deem germane to the nominations under consideration.

Nominations should provide adequate substantiating detail in regard to these and/or other factors to be considered in assessing the heritage conservation record of the corporation nominated.

All nominations must include the following:
• The proper and full name of the corporation in question
• The name, address, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses of the principal officer(s)of the corporation nominated
• The year in which the corporation in question was incorporated
• The name, address, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses of the individual/organization making the nomination. (In the case of an organization, please specify the name of the representative to whom all correspondence should be addressed.)
• The names, address, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses of the primary organization supporting the nomination. (Please specify the name of the representative to whom all correspondence should be addressed.)
• The names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses of other individuals and/or organizations supporting the nomination.
• A submission not to exceed four typewritten pages (approximately 1,000 to 1,500 words) detailing the reasons for which the corporation being nominated merits consideration for the prize
• Such photographs, videocassettes, news clippings, other printed material or other forms of visual or written information as the nominator and/or supporters deem relevant to the nomination
• Signed attestations to the effect that the individuals and/or organizations submitting or supporting the nomination in question are not employed by, appointed by, constituted by, or in any other way directly related to, the corporation being nominated.
• Any other information deemed relevant to the nomination by the individual and/or organization making or supporting the nomination.

Award: New Spirit of Community Award - Imagine Canada
Description: Established in 1996, Imagine's "New Spirit of Community" Partnership Awards recognize and celebrate outstanding partnerships between Canadian businesses and voluntary sector organizations. These partnerships are making a real difference in Canadian communities. Each year, a panel of senior leaders from the private and voluntary sectors act as award judges and select five award-winning partnerships and five runners-up from across Canada.

Award: The Imagine Corporate Citizenship Award - Imagine Canada
Description: Imagine has been recognizing excellence in corporate citizenship and community investment with this awards program since 1997, offered in partnership with the Canadian Investment Awards. For many years, Imagine has delivered one award to a Mutual Fund company that has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Eligibility:

The award is open to all organizations in the financial service sector. Companies will be judged on their contribution to community and their overall reputation as a good corporate citizen. Criteria for selection are the based on the Imagine corporate citizenship commitment. They include:
• Leadership, and commitment to community building including
• A commitment to corporate philanthropy and other forms of community support and investment, including but not limited to volunteerism, gifts-in-kind, donation of products and services.
• The active engagement of the leadership of the company in promoting and encouraging a culture of giving and volunteering among employees.
• The innovative contribution of the company to the community through partnership with community organizations to address social challenges.
• A commitment to responsible business practices
• Clearly stated policies and practices to ensure the ethical and responsible conduct of the business including the health and safety of individuals, communities and the environment.

Award: The Imagine Fund Industry Award for Best Performance by a Socially Responsible Investment Fund - Imagine Canada
Description: Imagine has been recognizing excellence in corporate citizenship and community investment with this awards program since 1997, offered in partnership with the Canadian Investment Awards. For many years, Imagine has delivered one award to a Mutual Fund company that has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Eligibility:

Open to all SRI Funds in the financial service sector this award recognizes the best performing Canadian socially responsible investment fund. Criteria:
• Demonstrated commitment to leadership SRI practices, quality of screening, shareholder advocacy and target investment to support community economic development.
• Demonstrated SRI research capacity.
Influence of fund on encouraging companies to adopt more socially responsive business practices.
• Transparency with respect to screening criteria, disclosure of proxy voting guidelines and voting record, fee disclosures etc.
• Demonstrated commitment to SRI education of brokers, planners, advisors, and unitholders.

Award: Engaging Tomorrow's Business Leaders Award - Imagine Canada
Description: For outstanding leadership in teaching corporate responsibility at Canadian business schools. The award considers the dedication to, integration of and innovation in corporate citizenship programming.

Award: Voluntary Sector Reporting Awards - CA-Queen's Centre for Governance
Description: The Voluntary Sector Reporting Awards (VSRAs) give not-for-profit organizations a valuable opportunity to prove that they take the issue of high quality reporting seriously. Financial awards are given for annual reports which demonstrate the highest levels of accountability and transparency, and which communicate effectively with beneficiaries, donors and stakeholders. The awards are designed to recognize the quality of reporting in the not-for-profit sector and aim to:
  • reward best practice in financial and non-financial disclosure;
  • raise the standard of annual reports including the provision of higher quality financial information in those reports; and
  • encourage more voluntary sector organizations to provide their reports and financial information online.

Eligibility:

Awards are open to all registered charities excluding organizations whose principal activities are run by or for municipalities, universities, hospitals or school boards (i.e. the MUSH sector). Eligible organizations for the 2010 competition should be headquartered in Ontario. Divisions of national and international organizations that produce separate annual reports in Ontario are also eligible. Eligible organizations must have audited financial statements either included in the annual report or submitted with the report to complete the nomination. Anyone can nominate an organization - management, board members, auditor, client or donor.
Award Type: Organizations will be entered into one of five categories:
  • Nationally focused organizations headquartered in Ontario
  • Internationally focused organizations headquartered in Ontario
  • Total revenues over $10 million
  • Total revenues from over $1 million to $10 million
  • Total revenues less than $1 million
A $5,000 award for training and development will be granted to the entrant with the best annual report in each category.

Judges will assess the reports based on the following criteria:
  • Availability
  • Clarity
  • User friendliness
  • Accessibility
  • Impact
