Award: Build-A-Bear Huggable Heroes Awards Description: The Build-A-Bear Workshop® Huggable Heroes® program recognizes young people making a difference in their local communities or around the world. The program is designed to encourage and empower kids to be young leaders and honour them for their dedication and accomplishments.
Eligibility:
18 years or younger and has made a positive contribution to his or her community or the world. Award Type: 12 Huggable Heroes will win $10,000 US (in local currency): $7,500 in the form of an educational scholarship and $2,500 will be donated to the charity of the winner’s choice. In addition, they will also each receive a 3-day, 2-night trip to the United States, where the winners will be honoured for their good deeds, meet the other Huggable Heroes and participate in a photo shoot for the 2009 Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes calendar.
Nomination/Application Process: Visit any Build-A-Bear Workshop store in Canada to pick up a nomination form or download online at www.buildabear.ca. Nominations can be made by anyone – parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, teachers, organization leaders, friends, etc. Young people can even nominate themselves.

Award: Today’s Parent For Kids’ Sake Awards Description: The Today’s Parent For Kids’ Sake Awards honor the incredible people who make a difference in the lives of Canada’s children, and in partnership with KRG Children’s Charitable Foundation, donate a total of $50,000 to children’s charities in Canada.
Eligibility:
We are searching for individuals who have made a difference in the lives of Canadian children. Nominees may be a volunteer, a professional, a neighborhood mom or even a kid with a big idea. Their influence may touch a large number of kids or just a few. The important thing is that they have seen a need and responded. Award Type: Five winners will receive a $10,000 cheque to donate to the registered children’s charity of their choice. The winners will attend a special event in Toronto, and will be profiled in the May 2008 issue of Today’s Parent.

Award: The Gabrielle Léger Award - Heritage Canada Description: This award is Canada's premier honour to an individual in the heritage field. It recognizes those individuals who have contributed outstanding services to the nation in the cause of heritage conservation. Eligibility:
Individuals, members of heritage, historic or cultural organizations, corporations and educational institutions who are sponsored by an organized heritage group and/or elected official at any level of government. Members of the board of governors and staff of Heritage Canada may only be nominated five years after their term of service has ended. Award Type: A bronze medal and an inscribed certificate. Nomination/Application Process: Nominations for each of these awards can be sent to: Director, Policy and Programs, Heritage Canada Foundation, 5 Blackburn Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario K1N 8A2. Deadline for Applications: April 30, 2008.
Award: Achievement Award - Heritage Canada Description: Achievement Awards honour the efforts of individuals or groups for recent heritage conservation work in their province or territory. The awards are designed to be given jointly by Heritage Canada and established provincial or territorial umbrella groups or associations. Eligibility:
Any individual or group that has completed a project or work in heritage conservation. Projects or work must demonstrate a high level of performance and must have been completed within the last two years. All nominations must be sponsored by an organized provincial or territorial heritage group that is a member of Heritage Canada and which has its own award programs. Members of the board of governors and staff of Heritage Canada may only be nominated five years after their term of service has ended. Award Type: An inscribed medal and certificate. Nomination/Application Process: All submission for Achievement Awards must include:
• Name, address and telephone number(s) of the nominee.
• A one-page typewritten statement describing the work or project for which the individual or organization has been selected and the reasons for the nomination.
• A 5" x 7" photograph of the project, if applicable.
• Support material (news clippings, letters of recommendation, slides or photographs).

Award: Journalism Prize - Heritage Canada Description: This award is to be presented annually to a journalist, working in either the print or electronic media, whose coverage of heritage issues is judged to be outstanding. Through the introduction of this new component of our awards program, the foundation hopes to encourage and reward greater and better coverage of heritage issues in the media. Eligibility:
Nominations for the award will be accepted from individuals or organizations, provided that the nominator is not directly related to, employed by, or in any other way directly associated with, the journalist in question. Award Type: Contact Heritage Canada for prize information. Nomination/Application Process: Nominations may be made on a Nominations Form available by calling or writing the Heritage Canada national office or electronically by e-mail or from the Heritage Canada web site. If a Nominations Form is not used, the information requested on that form should be provided in the order in which it appears on the Nomination Form in making a nomination. Nominations must include the following (to be set out on a Nominations Form):
• The full name of the journalist in question
• The name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the journalist nominated
• The name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the individual/organization making the nomination. (In the case of an organization, please specify the name of the representative to whom all correspondence should be addressed.)
• The names, address, telephone and fax numbers of the primary organization supporting the nomination. (Please specify the name of the representative to whom all correspondence should be addressed.)
• The names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers of other individuals and/or organizations supporting the nomination.
Nominations must be accompanied by:
• A submission not to exceed four typewritten pages (approximately 1,000 to 1,500 words) detailing the reasons for which the journalist being nominated merits consideration for the prize.
• Such photographs, videocassettes, news clippings, other printed material or other forms of visual or written information as the nominator and/or supporters deem relevant to the nomination.
• Signed attestations to the effect that the individuals and/or organizations submitting or supporting the nomination in question are not directly associated with or related to the journalist being nominated.
• Any other information deemed relevant to the nomination by the individual and/or organization making or supporting the nomination.Deadline for Applications: October 31st of each year.
Award: Global Citizenship Awards - Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund Description: To celebrate the achievements of young people who have demonstrated a commitment to working for a fairer world. In the award's first year, SCIAF awarded over 100 certificates to young people in recognition of their efforts – ranging from primary children asking for fairtrade products to be sold in their tuck shop to secondary pupils writing to their MPs about the issue of child labour. Eligibility:
Young people aged 5-18 years. Award Type: Certificate. Nomination/Application Process: Contact SCIAF directly on freephone 0800 43 55 10 and they will send an application form, free posters and resource information sheets.

Award: Young Canadians Challenge - Duke of Edinburgh Description: The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25, regardless of gender, background or ability. It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time. All Awards must be completed by the participant's 25th birthday. The Award Programme started in 1956 and its Founder and Patron is HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Eligibility:
Anyone aged 14 to 25. Award Type: Participationin the Awards programme. The Award is widely recognized by employers and people involved in education. Some of the benefits to young people include developing or discovering a sense of achievement; new skills and interests; self-confidence and self-reliance; leadership skills and abilities; exciting opportunities; friendship; experience of teamwork, problem-solving and decision-making; increased motivation; enhanced self-esteem; development of communication skills; a network of local, national and international connections; enjoyment. Award: Me to We Awards - Canadian Living Description: Inspiration for this awards program comes from the innovative book Me to We: Turning Self-Help on Its Head, written by Craig and Marc Kielburger, the two young men who founded Free the Children. The Kielburgers challenge the current self-help culture, suggesting that the secrets to happiness lie in selflessly helping others. To turn self-help on its head, focus on we rather than me. Do you know someone whose compassion and commitment have made a real difference in the lives of Canadians? We'd like to recognize their contribution with a Canadian Living Me to We Award. Sponsored by Western Union, these awards honour everyday Canadians who contribute to making Canada a better place for all.Eligibility:
Open to all residents of Canada who have reached the age of majority in their province of residence except employees, directors, officers, immediate family members, and those with whom they are domiciled of Canadian Living, Transcontinental Media G.P., Western Union, Free the Children and CTV and their respective advertising and promotional agencies. However, nominees in the Youth in Action category must be under 18 years of age. Award Type: In addition to a specially commissioned award, five winners will each receive a cash donation by Western Union, made directly to the charity of their choice. Winners and a guest will also be honoured at the Me to We Gala. If winners and guests live outside Toronto, they will receive complimentary transportation and accommodation. Award: Real Girls Doing Real Things That Matter - Maplelea Girls Description: The mission of the Maplelea Girls product line is to make a difference in the lives of Canadian girls by providing dolls and activity products that promote creative play, healthy active lifestyles and a knowledge and pride of the country we live in. Based on the knowledge that toys and books can be powerful educational tools, Maplelea was developed by a dedicated team of Canadian women with a primary objective of enlightening and inspiring our daughters. Through the Maplelea characters, our daughters come to learn that although Canadian girls are all unique individuals, they share certain values, aspirations and a belief in themselves and their country. The Maplelea Girls are upbeat, energetic, positive role models who are both an inspiration to, and a reflection of, Canadian girls from coast to coast to coast.
Now we are looking for real Canadian girls who embody the Maplelea spirit, and who, like their fictional counterparts, are positive role models for other young girls.

We want to identify and honour Canadian girls who, despite their young age, have contributed to their community in a positive way.
All Canadian girls, age 12 and under, who have seen a need and, with energy, ingenuity and commitment, worked towards meeting that need are eligible.
We are looking for girls from all parts of Canada, from communities large and small and from all walks of life.
Award Type: The girl receives a Maplelea Girl doll of her choice. Nomination/Application Process: Parents, teachers and other community members who are 19 or over may submit a nomination. Permission of the girl's parent or guardian must accompany the application. The parent/guardian's permission grants Avonlea Traditions the right to use the girl's name and photo for publicity purposes. Nomination forms available online.
Finalists will be asked to provide two references for people who can verify the girl's contribution.
The first girl to be honoured will be announced July 1, 2004. Following this, additional girls will be similarly honoured on an on-going basis until the conclusion of this recognition program.

Award: Gemini Humanitarian Award - The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television Description: The Award recognizes humanitarian efforts by an individual that is involved in or is connected with improving people’s lives and reducing suffering. It also gives charities the opportunity to recognize essential volunteers in their community and promote humanitarian efforts across Canada.

Award: Thérèse Casgrain Volunteer Award Description: In 2001, the International Year of Volunteers, the Government of Canada launched the Thérèse Casgrain Volunteer Award. This award commemorates the work of Thérèse Casgrain and honours those who have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to volunteering.
Thérèse Casgrain was an eminent Canadian whose actions continue to serve as an example to all. She was the force behind various social reforms promoting justice and equality. Thérèse Casgrain was appointed to the Senate in 1970 and became a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1974. Throughout her life she chose to defend the cause of disadvantaged members of society, to denounce social injustice and to lend a voice to those who had none. Thérèse Casgrain was an inspiring Canadian in every sense of the word.
The award is presented annually to two Canadians, one man and one woman. It recognizes volunteers from communities across Canada. Award recipients are individuals whose social commitment and persistent efforts have contributed significantly to the advancement of a social cause and the well-being of their fellow Canadians.
Eligibility:
The Committee seeks candidates who meet the following criteria:
they have created effective partnerships with the public, the private, the voluntary sector, local communities and/or governments.
they are Canadian citizens;
there is evidence that the spirit of volunteerism has played a significant role throughout their lifetime;
their volunteer efforts have enabled fellow Canadians to participate in the workplace and/or their communities;
they have demonstrated leadership, creativity, cooperation and hard work in advancing a social cause; and
they have created effective partnerships with the public, the voluntary sector, local communities and/or governments. Award Type: The award consists of a bronze medallion bearing the likeness of Thérèse Casgrain; a lapel pin; a certificate of recognition; and, $5,000 to be awarded to a registered Canadian charity designated by the recipient.
Nomination/Application Process: A candidate for the Thérèse Casgrain Volunteer Award may be sponsored by:
1. a) an organization; or
2. b) three individuals — a sponsor and two co-sponsors, none of whom are related to the candidate.The application must include the following information:

Award: FLARE Volunteer Awards - Flare Magazine Description: Flare Magazine has made a commitment to acknowledge, celebrate and publicize the importance of volunteerism in Canada. As one of the most acclaimed magazines in the country speaking to women, we feel it is our responsibility and privilege to highlight outstanding female volunteers from coast to coast. Eligibility:
The Awards are presented each year to six Canadian women aged 18 and up whose volunteer achievements have made a difference to the lives of the people in their communities. Award Type: The recipients are invited (as our guests) to Toronto for an overnight stay in the spring of each year. They also participate as guests of honour in an awards ceremony and are featured and profiled in a subsequent awards announcement in a national edition of Flare Magazine.
