We implemented the changes to the Volunteer and Event listings
for several reasons:
- The volume of listings has grown to the point where we could
no longer maintain each page manually, and an automated system
was needed.
- The number of listings on many pages was huge (up to 250
on any given day), so the listings were very slow to load for
those with dial-up connections, and offered only limited search
capability.
- Advertisers were asking for more functionality to help them
manage their listings (e.g. extending, editing, deleting, suspending,
reactivating listings).
- Volunteers were asking for more services, such as e-mail
alerts, and better search features that allow them to look for
opportunities of interest by region, the type of work (e.g.
friendly visiting vs. board member), and the segment of the
sector (e.g. health vs. environment). Many teens and groups
also want to be able to search for opportunities where they
were welcome.
