The Grantseeker's Handbook of Essential Internet Sites

Edited by James DeAngelis; 163 pages; Published by Capitol Publications; Phone: 1-800-655-5597 or Fax: 1- 800-392-7886

For those with neither the time nor the inclination to spend endless hours clicking around in cyberspace, there's a new reference book available and it's been designed with fundraisers directly in mind. The Grantseeker's Guide to Essential Internet Sites offers a paper-based treasure map to where the money (or at least, information about it) can be found in cyberspace. While all of the information can be found through online research, the book offers quick access and ready references that are sure to save time whether you're an experienced online researcher or a nervous newbie.

The Grantseeker's Guide includes descriptions of more than 245 sites, itemized by sector. It includes corporations, foundations and associations, government, research, and resource sites. Each description gives the site address, type of resource (i.e. web site, mailing list), and a short description of what you will find when you get there.

While the focus is American, there are a few Canadian references included such as CharityVillage and the Community Foundation of Ottawa-Carleton. All of the government sites and the majority of corporate sites are American, but many corporations provide links to Canadian subsidiaries. As well, several of the foundations listed offer grants internationally.

Rather than sending you to a company's home page in the corporations section, the book guides you straight to the goods on its philanthropic activities and requirements. As with all print directories of online resources, there are some addresses that have changed since the book's printing. However, the guide also lists all major search engine addresses, so it isn't too difficult to check for a new address.

The bulk of references are to web sites, but there is also a healthy collection of mailing lists and a few gopher sites (although these are mostly American). Sites are indexed three ways: by alphabetical order; by type of program (i.e. gopher, world wide web); and by major category of giving for foundations and corporations.

For those people who are still exploring the difference between mailing lists and news groups, the book includes a brief glossary of essential Internet terms and a quick summary of major program types. For anyone needing the comfort of words on paper to help navigate the online world, The Grantseeker's Guide to Essential Internet Sites (despite its American focus) offers a handy starting point.
