Stories in bloom
May 3, 2004
By Cam Tait
This week, we profile some volunteer tid-bits which, one day, will hopefully grow into stories of their own.
*Volunteer Calgary has announced that its executive director will be leaving this fall. After 15 years Martha Parker is stepping down. She has, indeed, left her mark, and has been instrumental in developing programs including Leaders of Tomorrow, Paint the Town, the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations, Leadership Calgary, the Calgary Workplace Volunteer Council and Families Volunteering Together.
"As Volunteer Calgary enters its 50th Anniversary in 2005, this is a time for great celebration. I leave with the assurance that Volunteer Calgary is well-positioned to move forward with confidence and continued big dreams," Martha was quoted on volunteercalgary.ab.ca
*Say hello to Alison Denton, the new executive director of Volunteer Thunder Bay! Alison took over in late March and replaces Alexandra Davidson, who will remain a close friend of the organization. Alison has returned to Thunder Bay where she worked a year in Ottawa the National Director of Advoacay and Communications for the Canadian Paraplegic Association. "I am happy to take on the new and exciting challenges and opportunities of Volunteer Thunder Bay! and believe my long time experience in the sector will prove to be an asset to the organization," Alison says in an e-mail. "However, I also recognize I have a huge learning curve in front of me and large shoes to fill."
*Former prime minister Flora MacDonald has been sharing her time in Afgahinstan. MacDonald's involvement is in conjunction with Peri Dar's Focus on Women campaign, raising funds for Afghan women through CARE.
*On Sunday, the Junior League of Winnipeg celebrated 75 years of sharing. Watch for the story of Shanna Hapko coming in a future Spotlight.
*The United Way and the (Greater) Moncton Volunteer Centre are in the driver's seat with a new program. The Volunteer Driver Program is now being offered to people with low incomes who wouldn't qualify for other driving programs. Volunteers will drive people to medical appointments, self-help workshops, therapy sessions and so on.
