red dotBC community gaming grants once again available
August 31, 2009
The BC Ministry of Housing and Social Development has lifted the funding freeze for community gaming grants, having completed a review of the program. As in previous years, demand for community gaming grants significantly exceeds the available funding. Some projects, such as capital project grants, playground grants, and three-year grants, will not be eligible for funding this year. Applications for the next quarter from public safety organizations and parent advisory committees are due to the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch by August 31, and will be considered by November 30, as usual. Because charities and nonprofit organizations provide support to Canadians in every community across the country and many provide essential services, Imagine Canada has created an emergency preparedness package directly relating to the H1N1 (Human Swine Flu) pandemic. Although there are conflicting opinions about how serious the pandemic is likely to be, it makes sense for organizations to be prepared. Topics covered in the package include teleworking preparedness, job task templates to ensure that critical tasks get done, a sample emergency plan, and a variety of articles on pandemic preparedness. The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, announced the renewal of the Canada Music Fund with an annual investment of $27.6 million over five years. Minister Moore also announced that the government is changing the structure of the fund in order to reduce the administrative burden and increase the visibility of Canadian music on digital platforms and in international markets. The Canada Music Fund is administered by the Department of Canadian Heritage in partnership with MUSICACTION, FACTOR, the SOCAN Foundation, and Library and Archives Canada. A new US survey found that roughly half of consumers of all ages support causes through volunteer work and almost 70% through a monetary donation. Of those, 38% donate money to health organizations, while almost 32% support social service organizations. Of those who volunteer, frequency of that support varies, with more than 11% volunteering two to four days per month and 10% volunteering one day per week. According to a recent report, Alberta has the highest teacher/student ratio in the country at 16.8 students per educator. BC was second with 16.6 students, while the lowest ratios were in Yukon at 10.6 students per educator and Newfoundland and Labrador at 13.0. Overall, the report found declining enrolments across Canada, increased enrolments in second language immersion programs, and a slight drop in the graduation rate. -- Statistics Canada

The Vancouver Weekend to End Breast Cancer was incredibly successful, raising more than $2.9 million to further research, screening, and programs to help women suffering from breast or gynecological cancer. Participants in the 60 kilometre, two-day walk were expected to each bring in $2,000 in pledges, but some brought upward of $10,000, and one participant had a total of $54,000. A new US survey finds that 53% of those aged 50 and over participate in volunteer work. A further 76% reported that they provide monetary donationas to charities. Causes most favoured by those over 50 include Alzheimer's disease, social services, the environment, and military support. The Institute for Nonprofit Studies at Mount Royal College has announced its second call for applied research funding proposals. A total of $40,000 is available for university researchers in two funding programs:

  • a total of $15,000 is available in the applied research program; and
  • up to $25,000 is available in the first partnership research program; each focusing on either governance, sustainability, or policy.

The Kaiser Foundation is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2010 National Awards for Excellence Program in mental health and addictions initiatives. The program honours the outstanding work being done by the thousands of Canadian organizations, communities, individuals, and media who are engaged in the fields of mental health and addictions. Each award recipient receives a $10,000 grant to be directed to a recognized charity of their choice. Nominations for the seven different award categories are due November 20, 2009. The Honourable Aileen Carroll, Ontario Minister of Culture announced earlier this month that Ontario not-for-profit and charitable organizations received a total of $32.9 million in funding, including $26.2 million in community grants to 418 charitable organizations and $6.7 million in province-wide grants to 35 groups, all through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The OTF awards $120 million annually. Funding is allocated in four sectors: arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation. In a US survey of foundations, 54% responded negatively to generic proposals that could easily have been sent to other funders, while 42% were neutral on the issue, and 4% were supportive of this tactic. A further 66% indicated they would prefer that applicants focus the proposal on one specific project, rather than several projects at once. This same survey found that 49% of responding foundations felt it was important that the organization commits its own funds in the project, 42% said it was important that the organization have other partners already secured, and 47% wanted a clear plan for gradually getting off the foundation funding. -- Foundation Source

red dotTwo more charities land in hot water with the CRA
August 17, 2009
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) revoked the status of two charities this past week. First, the Jesus El Buen Pastor Spanish Pentecostal Church of Toronto allegedly issued in excess of $18.5 million in receipts for cash and non-cash gifts received through a tax shelter arrangement. The CRA notes, "Of this amount, $15.8 million consisted of non-cash gifts that the charity reports to have distributed as part of its own activities. However, the charity's records fail to substantiate that the property actually existed, that the property was in the charity’s possession, that the values recorded on the receipts were accurate, or that the property was distributed for charitable purposes." The second charity, Funds for Canada Foundation, was also allegedly taking part in a tax shelter scheme. According to the CRA, the charity was operating "for the primary or collateral purpose of furthering the Donations for Canada tax shelter by agreeing, for a fee, to act as a receipting agent in the tax shelter arrangement." red dotEdmonton Weekend to End Breast Cancer event raises $1.8 million

The Edmonton leg of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer was a success, raising more than $1.8 million to further innovative cancer research, screening initiatives, and patient programs that will not only benefit those suffering from breast cancer, but all women’s cancers. Participants walked a total of 60 kilometres on a trail around Edmonton over the course of two days. According to a new UK survey, third sector employees are more satisfied with their jobs than those in the private and public sectors. The research indicates that 70% of voluntary sector workers are satisfied or very satisfied with their job, as opposed to 64% in the private sector and 63% in the public sector. Another 85% felt they have good control over their methods of working. The research also found that managers in the third sector were far more likely to to assist their staff in working effectively than those in the private or public sectors. -- YouGov

The National Post’s Raise-a-Reader campaign seeks to use the media to raise funds, awareness, and resources for family literacy programs in the Greater Toronto Area. If your organization is interested in receiving funding for a literacy program in the GTA, you are invited to submit an application. Fund recipients must be a registered not-for-profit society or have a charitable number, and literacy programs must exist within the GTA. Funds allocated from the 2009 campaign must be used during the 2010 calendar year. The submission deadline is October 30. The results are in from GuideStar's newest Nonprofit Economic Survey, which examines the financial state of US nonprofits. The good news is that the proportion of nonprofits reporting decreased contributions, 52%, remained unchanged from the previous survey, covering October 2008 through February 2009. The bad news is that the numbers don't reflect the stress the economy is placing on nonprofits. As one participant stated, "We are hanging on, barely." The Ontario Ministry of Culture is accepting applications for a new funding opportunity for the province's museums. The Museums and Technology Fund will invest in innovative projects and partnerships that will enable collections-based arts and heritage organizations to use digital technology to support community economic development, education, and life-long learning. Eligible organizations can include community museums, community art galleries, community archives, and heritage organizations with provincial mandates. US grantmakers' endowments fell by 26% last year, a sharp difference from 2007 when endowments rose by 9.9%. The only asset class reporting positive returns for 2008 was fixed income, where the average return was 0.6%. Perhaps surprisingly in the current market environment, 45% of foundations reported that they increased their dollar spending by an average of 20.4% - many times higher than the inflation rate. Thirty-one percent of participants reported lowering their dollar spending - nearly 2.5 times the rate of 13% reported in last year’s study. -- Commonfund Institute

Rethink Breast Cancer (Rethink) is calling young breast cancer survivors to submit their "BIG" ideas to assist others diagnosed with the disease. red dotNew report shows fewer charities are raising more money this year than last

Less than half of charities surveyed raised more money in 2008 than in 2007, and fundraising gains dropped significantly across the board, according the final report of the Association of Fundraising Professional’s State of Fundraising Survey. The full report has data about different types of fundraising, board giving, and key issues affecting fundraising. The survey asked charities to compare their fundraising totals in 2008 to their figures in 2007. Overall, just 46% of organizations raised more funds in 2008, a new low in the eight-year history of the survey. In a typical year, about 60% of respondents raise more money compared to the previous year. A new US survey of fundraisers shows that many in the field are finding their jobs to be much tougher than usual in the current economic climate. Overall, just over 86% of fundraisers surveyed said the economy is having a negative or very negative impact on fundraising right now, a slight improvement from the 93% who reported such an effect in December 2008. Almost 60% expect a continued negative effect from the economy in the next six months, while 23% said the economy will have a positive impact during that time. -- Center on Philanthropy

The Final Proposed Accessible Information and Communications Standard, as part of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, has now been posted on the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services’ website. The initial standard was released for its mandatory public review period from November 17, 2008 to February 6, 2009. The committee then revised the initial proposed standard to reflect the public’s input, and the final proposed standard has now been submitted to the Minister of Community and Social Services for consideration. The proposed standard outlines how businesses and organizations may be required to create, provide, and receive information and communications in ways that are accessible for people with disabilities. The YMCA of the USA’s brand is worth almost $6.4 billion, making it the nation’s most valuable nonprofit brand, according to The Cone Nonprofit Power Brand 100 report. This report explores the unique relationship between nonprofit brand image and financial performance and revealed that some organizations may be leaving millions of dollars in potential unearned revenue on the table. The research also shows that nonprofits must make branding and trademarks a high priority. The top 10 US nonprofit brands were:

Each year the McMaster Students Union (MSU) hosts a gala event known as the McMaster Charity Ball. This year marks the 12th anniversary of the event, and an anticipated $30,000 will be raised. Should you wish to submit a proposal for these funds, please outline the following:

  • Why your organization is in need of funds
  • The number of people benefiting from the funds
  • How the funds will be used. Note: the funds donated by the MSU must stay in the Hamilton community and have a local impact.
  • How your organization will help leading up to the event
  • How your organization will be involved the day/night of the event

According to a new US survey of family foundations, 92% said they want an organization applying for their funding to have clear goals, plans, and measures of success, and 76% want a demonstrated organizational expertise in the proposed area of funding. A further 72% think it is important that the organization have a strong reputation, and 64% felt that an innovative idea was also key to convincing them to fund the proposal. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) revoked the charitable registration of The Mission Against Poverty Shelter, a Toronto-area charity. In a letter to the organization, the CRA stated that there was non-compliance with the Income Tax Act, alleging that the group "issued receipts for transactions that do not qualify as gifts; issued receipts otherwise than in accordance with the Act and its Regulations; has failed to maintain and failed to provide adequate records to support its activities; and has used its income for the personal benefit of its directors." As reported by canada.com, many BC arts, sports, and community groups are still waiting for Direct Access gaming and lottery funding. These grants normally arrive in the spring, but many groups are still waiting for word on why they haven't received their funds. A government spokesman suggested that the grants had been frozen for the time being, and that a decision regarding the freeze would be made shortly. TELUS announced that they will provide a $100,000 donation from the 2010 TELUS World Skins Game to The Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children in support of Jeneece Place, to begin the planning and development of this home away from home for children requiring medical treatment, and their families. "The need for Jeneece Place exists now. Vancouver Island children and families who have to travel to Victoria for care at Victoria General Hospital, the Queen Alexandra Centre, or for specialist appointments and lab tests need a home away from home," said Darren Entwistle, TELUS president and CEO. A new US report shows that, despite the difficult economy, volunteering in the country remained steady last year. The report found that 26.4%, or 61.8 million, Americans volunteered their time to a nonprofit last year, up a total of one million people from the previous year's survey. Americans donated a total of eight billion hours of service, estimated to be worth $162 billion. Statistics also showed that more young Americans are volunteering their time, with volunteers between the ages of 16 and 24 rising from 7.8 million to 8.2 million. -- Corporation for National and Community Service

Thanks to the generosity of some of Bay Street's biggest financial players, one of Toronto's facilities for at-risk women and infants remains open. The TMX Group, CIBC Children's Foundation, Bay Street Children's Foundation, TD Securities and the TD Securities Underwriting Hope Fund have donated $100,000 to Nazareth House, a nonprofit home for at-risk women and infants. For the past 24 years, Nazareth House has provided safe, affordable, and healthy housing to more than 1,000 women and 125 infants. Three-quarters (72%) of working Canadians believe that the current level of adult literacy - that is reading, writing, and mathematics skills among adults for whom English or French is their first language - is a "problem." Further, an additional 26% believe it is a "minor problem," while just 2% believe there is no problem at all. Over three-quarters, 79%, of respondents "strongly agree" that they "possess the necessary literacy skills to secure a new job" if they were to lose their current employment. Demonstrating less confidence, 16% "somewhat agree" that they have these skills, while 5% "disagree." -- Ipsos Reid

red dotOntario nonprofits encouraged to apply for infrastructure stimulus funding

Ontario not-for-profit organizations interested in upgrading their infrastructure can now apply for funding through the federal government's Stimulus Fund. The Government of Canada will contribute up to one-third of eligible project costs, and in exceptional cases up to half of eligible project costs, with the funding being matched by the Province of Ontario. Priority will be given to the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, but new construction will be considered provided it can be fully completed by March 31, 2011. Eligible project categories include: temporary housing structures, community centres, community services, and cultural infrastructure. Applications are due by August 18, 2009. red dotAwards for nonprofit and social economy research announced

The Institute for Nonprofit Studies at Mount Royal College announced the recipients of its first national competition for a graduate student research award in Canadian nonprofit and social economy research. Two university graduate students will share $5,000 and receive supprt to attend the Association of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research (ANSER) conference in Montreal in 2010. The recipients are Suzanne Cook and Gina Grosenick. Cook is exploring the transfer of skills between work and volunteer activities by retirees, and Grosenick is examining the strategic communication practices of nonprofit organizations who advocate on issues of poverty, affordable housing, and homelessness. red dotSaskatoon organization offering extensive arts program to at-risk youth

SYCAP is looking for at-risk youth, aged 16 - 30, who are not employed or in school and who are ineligible for EI, for their Urban Canvas Project starting in September. The full-time, 39-week project will offer participants already possessing a certain degree of artistic ability, the skill set, experience, mentoring, and public art portfolio/resume necessary to gain employment in the commercial art industry. More importantly, the participants will develop personally, socially, linguistically, and cognitively to the point where employment in any vocation or a return to formal education becomes not only a strong personal want, but also a real possibility.
