To determine if there is a relationship between a donor's degree of entrepreneurialism and their likelihood to give a charitable gift. Methodology: Random sample of Canadian population Respondents screened as donors and as entrepreneurs Telephone interviews 1,203 responded (response rate of 36%) 1/3 Entrepreneurs, 2/3 Non-Entrepreneurs March/April, 2000 Computerized response input Computerized analysis based on age, income, giving level etc Accuracy = +/- 3.5%, 19 times out of 20
Major Findings
- In our national survey, one in three DONORS self identified as entrepreneurs. That is huge. And that means those serious about fundraising should be mining their database for entrepreneurial donors.
- 70% of those who donated more than $10,000 a year have given in the past week. Those who give most give more often.
- There is a huge gap in Canada between those entrepreneurial donors who have given a gift in their will (11%) and those who say they are willing to give (28%).
- The more a person gives annually, the more likely they are to know where their next gift will go.
- Two characteristics, which are NOT necessary to being an entrepreneur, are a) to own a business and b) to make money. Making money and owning a business are by-products of pursing an enterprise or a dream. The characteristics essential to be an entrepreneur are a) being a risk-taker, b) seeing opportunities, c) pursing opportunities, d) leveraging resources and e) setting direction for the enterprise.
- The study asked five (5) basic questions on motivators and barriers to giving. We identified and measured motivators for
- Giving the next gift
- Increasing one's giving
- Giving the ultimate gift
- Refusing to give
- Stopping ones giving to a specific charity
- It's fascinating what turns donors off and what causes them NOT to give a gift. We learned that it does not matter how we turn off a donor. Regardless of what causes a donor to be turned off, they generally react the same way to the same degree and with the same intensity.
- Finally (and of course there is so much more than this) we have been able to show that there is a direct relationship between a donors degree of entrepreneurialism and their propensity to give.
