National Study Shows

Entrepreneurs, Key to Charitable Giving

A new national study on giving by entrepreneurs in Canada has found that 70% of respondents donating more than $10,000 a year, have given something to charity in the last week. Those who give more, tend to give more often.

The study also found that one in every three donors in Canada qualifies as an entrepreneur. What this means, say researchers, is that those organizations serious about raising money for charity need to consider of the entrepreneurs among their donors and pay special attention to them.

Researchers Guy Mallabone, Vice-president of Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (Calgary) and Tony Myers Associate Director of Development at the University of Alberta, Edmonton conducted the study as part of their master's thesis in Philanthropy and Development at Saint Mary's University in Minnesota.

"The study unearthed fascinating information about entrepreneurial giving in Canada," says Mallabone. "For example we found out that the more people give, the more likely they are to know exactly where their next gift will go. And we found out there is a huge gap between those entrepreneurs who say they want to give a gift in their will (28%), and those who have already done so (11%).

"The most important thing we found out," says Myers, "is the more entrepreneurial characteristics a donors have, the more likely they are to give a gift to charity. So with one in three donors in Canada qualifying as an entrepreneur charities and non-profit organizations have to give serious consideration to identifying and caring for entrepreneurial donors."

The findings based on a national study on motivators and barriers to giving by entrepreneurs, involving 1203 participants, were released today at the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE) Toronto Congress. The study is accurate to within +/- 3.5%, 19 times out of 20. Mallabone and Myers are writing a book on their research.

The study was made possible by funding from Research Innovations Inc, Canadian Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, CharityVillage.com, the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE), the University of Alberta, Edmonton and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary.
